Three corrections officers were hospitalized Friday morning following a coordinated stabbing attack by six inmates at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Wise County, Virginia. According to the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC), five of the assailants are confirmed members of the violent MS-13 gang, originally from El Salvador and residing in the U.S. illegally. The sixth inmate is a U.S. citizen affiliated with the Sureño 13 gang, convicted of second-degree murder.

The assault occurred around 9:45 a.m. when the six inmates launched a premeditated attack on corrections staff. Five officers were injured, with three requiring medical treatment. Two officers remain hospitalized in stable condition, while the others were discharged after receiving care. VADOC Director Chad Dotson condemned the attack, emphasizing the daily risks faced by corrections officers and commending the swift response of the Wallens Ridge team.
“Five of the individuals responsible for this senseless attack should never have been in this country in the first place. Every single day, our officers put their lives on the line to ensure public safety for the more than 8.8 million people across the Commonwealth. This attack is an example of the dangers they face when they show up to work every day. Our officers are heroes, and I commend the team at Wallens Ridge for their swift response.”
MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, is a transnational criminal gang known for its extreme violence and criminal activities, including murder, human trafficking, extortion, and drug distribution. The gang has a significant presence in various regions of the U.S., including Virginia. Law enforcement agencies have linked MS-13 to numerous violent crimes, and the Trump administration has increased enforcement actions targeting gang members who have entered the country illegally.

The administration’s refusal to return Garcia, despite a Supreme Court order, has ignited a debate about the removal of unlawful residents and where the authority lies.
