Silicon Valley billionaire and longtime Trump ally Peter Thiel has reportedly moved his family to Argentina, becoming the latest high-profile wealthy American to seek refuge from what critics describe as an increasingly hostile political and tax climate in the United States.
According to a report from The New York Times, the PayPal co-founder has purchased a mansion in one of Buenos Aires’ most exclusive neighborhoods, enrolled his children in a local school, acquired land in neighboring Uruguay, and spent significant time in the South American nation as he weighs his future outside the U.S.
Sources familiar with Thiel’s thinking told the newspaper that concerns over rising taxes on the wealthy, growing political instability, and even catastrophic global risks — including nuclear conflict and unchecked artificial intelligence — have fueled his interest in establishing a permanent foothold in Argentina.
The timing is notable.
Thiel’s reported move comes as progressive politicians across the United States push for new taxes targeting the ultra-wealthy. In California, where Thiel built much of his business empire, proposals for a billionaire wealth tax have gained support among Democrat voters and could potentially cost some of the state’s richest residents billions of dollars.
His investment firm, Thiel Capital, opened a major office in Miami on Dec. 31 as California lawmakers continued debating wealth tax proposals that Bloomberg previously reported could expose Thiel to a massive tax bill.
Argentina, meanwhile, has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination for wealthy investors under libertarian President Javier Milei, who has built his political brand around slashing government spending, cutting regulations, and opposing tax hikes.
According to The New York Times, Thiel has met privately with Milei multiple times since 2024 and has developed a close relationship with the Argentine leader. Reports indicate Argentina has even explored offering Thiel residency or citizenship, though government officials have publicly denied those discussions.
The billionaire’s relocation also reflects growing concerns among some business leaders that America’s political rhetoric toward wealth creators is becoming increasingly aggressive.
Those fears were amplified recently in New York City when Mayor Zohran Mamdani sparked controversy by filming a viral “tax the rich” video outside hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin’s $238 million Manhattan penthouse while promoting a new luxury property tax proposal. The stunt drew criticism from business leaders and investors, who accused the mayor of publicly targeting a private citizen.

Citadel founder Griffin later described the video as “creepy and weird” and said it reinforced his decision to continue expanding his business operations in Miami rather than New York.
Even Amazon founder Jeff Bezos criticized Mamdani for portraying Griffin as a “villain,” arguing there was no reason to single out a businessman who contributes heavily to the city’s economy.

For supporters of higher taxes on the wealthy, Thiel’s move may be viewed as evidence that billionaires should contribute more to society regardless of where they choose to live.
For critics, however, it is a warning sign.
As progressive politicians push for wealth taxes and increasingly confrontational rhetoric toward America’s highest earners, some of the country’s most influential investors appear to be making contingency plans — and in Thiel’s case, that plan reportedly begins 5,000 miles south of Washington.

Socialism/Communism once again takes a major nose-dive.
It never worked before … why try it again?
All it does is make the wealthier people, who WERE the major tax payers, to have move away.
And it leaves the poorer people with no one left to pay for the support of those who either can’t or don’t want to work for a living.
“Stupid is as stupid does.”
Or is this just a way for those who are against America ( our freedoms and our rights ) to have a chance to bring this country down?
Then the question is; are they stupid or just evil … or both?
I believe that the answer is BOTH!
Anyone who tries to take away our Constitutional rights, especially our 2nd Amendment rights, is PROVING that they want to do something to us for which we would want to be able to have our guns with which to protect ourselves from them and/or from what they plan to do to us.
Our founders understood that.
That’s precisely why that amendment was placed in the Constitution in the first place!
