Federal prosecutors have officially indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams on charges ranging from bribery and fraud to campaign finance violations. The 57-page indictment, unsealed Thursday morning, outlines a complex scheme where Adams is accused of soliciting illegal contributions from foreign donors, including prominent Turkish businessmen and a Turkish government official. These donors allegedly sought to influence the mayor through their contributions.
According to the indictment, Adams not only solicited these illegal donations but was also fully aware of their true intent. The charges go even further, claiming that Adams accepted over $100,000 in luxurious perks – business class flights, lavish hotel stays and more – allegedly from the same individuals behind the illegal contributions. Prosecutors argue that these extravagant gifts were another way to buy favor with the mayor.
Public Deception: Gifts Hidden from Disclosure
Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, made it clear during a Thursday press conference: Adams had a legal obligation to disclose these gifts on his public forms. “The mayor had a duty to disclose these gifts on his annual public disclosure forms, so that the public could see who was giving him what,” Williams stated. “But as we allege, year after year after year, he kept the public in the dark.”
The indictment alleges that despite claiming otherwise, Adams repeatedly denied receiving gifts, while in reality, he was secretly enjoying them.
The First of His Kind: A Historic Indictment
Mayor Adams is now the first sitting mayor of New York City to be indicted in modern history. Previous mayors have also faced corruption investigations. For example, Mayor William O’Dwyer was linked to a corruption scandal related to the New York Police Department and organized crime. However, he resigned before any formal charges were brought against him in 1950 when he was appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. Federal investigations have also involved other mayors, but these did not lead to formal charges or indictments while they were still serving as mayor.
Currently, Adams is facing five criminal charges, including the solicitation of contributions from a foreign national.
And it’s not just the indictment. Adams’ administration has been facing a whirlwind of challenges in recent weeks. Several top officials – including his police commissioner, schools chancellor and chief counsel – have all resigned. Meanwhile, his administration is under the scrutiny of at least four federal agencies conducting investigations.
A Legacy Under Siege
Adams, who became mayor in 2022 after campaigning on a centrist platform focused on reducing violence, had previously spent over two decades in law enforcement, climbing the ranks to commander in the NYPD. With reelection looming next year, these new legal troubles cast a shadow over his future.
This isn’t the first time Adams has found himself tied to scandal. Critics point out that he’s kept a notably close circle of friends with questionable pasts. He’s been photographed partying with two restaurateurs convicted of felonies and has publicly touted his mentoring of a bishop with a lengthy rap sheet.
To add fuel to the fire, Philip Banks, Adams’ own deputy mayor for public safety, was implicated as an unindicted co-conspirator in a previous federal corruption investigation.
A String of Scandals: The Broader Picture
Adams’ troubles mirror the widespread corruption scandals plaguing various departments in the city. Last year, the commissioner of the city’s Department of Buildings was indicted for accepting bribes in exchange for favors. Earlier this year, seventy current and former employees of New York City public housing were charged with accepting illegal payments from contractors. Even the Fire Department hasn’t been immune. Just last week, two former fire chiefs were indicted for taking bribes to speed up safety inspections.
Growing Calls for Resignation
Since the indictment became public late Wednesday, the pressure on Adams to step down has intensified. Nearly two dozen city council members have called for his resignation.
For now, at least, the mayor remains defiant.
