Gunman Drives to Police Station After Killing 7 in California

-

The suspected gunman responsible for killing seven people in two in Half Moon Bay, is in custody.

Zhao Chunli, 67, allegedly began his rampage at Magic Mushroom Farm on Monday afternoon. San Mateo County sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene at 2:22 p.m. Pacific Time (PT). Officers reported four deceased gunshot victims at the scene. A fifth, in critical condition, was transported to Stanford Medical Center.

Running minutes behind the gunman, raced to the next scene, a nearby mushroom farm, where officers found three workers murdered.

Officers confronted Chunli in his car at a police substation later that afternoon.

Chunli's motivation remains unclear to investigations, though local authorities have described him as a disgruntled employee who worked at one of the farms.

CBS News has more:

A view from above the mushroom farm showed deputies and law enforcement personnel gathered outside one of many greenhouses at the site. What appeared to be a body under a yellow tarp was visible at the entrance to one of the greenhouses.

During the police response to the shooting, the sheriff's office said a staging would be located at a substation at 537 Kelly Ave. At around 4:40 p.m., a man wearing a white baseball-style cap was seen being led away from the substation in handcuffs.

According to the sheriff's office, the suspect in the shootings drove himself to the substation located between the two businesses and surrendered to deputies.

Authorities later confirmed they believed the weapon — a semiautomatic rifle — was the only weapon used in the shooting, but could not confirm whether it was obtained legally.

Zhao is a resident of Half Moon Bay, a wealthy community of 12,000 residents thirty minutes from San Francisco.

  1. What’s going on in CA. What would the media be saying if these two last mass murders happened in Texas or Florida. And with all their gun restrictions. I bet minimum news coverage at best.
