For some Democrats, President Biden's recent press conference, while managing to exceed some expectations, did little to salvage his reelection campaign. His performance, marred by numerous gaffes, has led to calls for a change in leadership.

Rep. (D-Conn.), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, voiced his concerns following Biden's unscripted and often awkward interaction with the press. Himes emphasized the risk of relying on an 81-year-old president prone to off-script mishaps.

“Imagine that three months from now, we get another performance like there was in the debate.

MONDAY – Israel is facing a multi-front war. Thousands of Iran-backed terrorists from the region offer to join Lebanese Hezbollah in its fight against Israel.

The groups from the so-called “axis of resistance” say they are using a “unity of arenas strategy” and they will only stop fighting when Israel ends its offensive in Gaza against their ally, Hamas.

Over the past decade, Iran-backed fighters from Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan fought together in Syria's 13-year conflict, helping tip the balance in favor of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Officials from Iran-backed groups say they could also join together again against Israel.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech Wednesday that militant leaders from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and other countries have previously offered to send tens of thousands of fighters to help Hezbollah, but he said the group already has more than 100,000 fighters.

THAT'S A LOT OF HYPE BUT THINGS ARE GOING TO GET VERY UGLY SOON.

Judge calls for restitution in Cuba agent's case — but prosecutors say US is ‘only victim.' A federal judge called a hearing for Friday morning to decide whether a former American ambassador convicted of being a covert agent for Cuba should be required to pay any victims of his betrayal against the U.S. The case rocked both the U.S. intelligence and exile communities.

PENTAGON WOKE WATCH

A nonprofit group is lobbying for the Defense Department to provide data to service members on community safety, hate crimes and compassionate reassignments at prospective duty stations to help their decisions when accepting orders.

POLITICS

Democrats wrestle with whether to attend Netanyahu's address to Congress July 24 as many plan to boycott. The last time Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the U.S. Congress 9 years ago, nearly 60 Democrats skipped his speech, calling it an affront to then-President Barack Obama as he negotiated a disastrous nuclear deal with Iran. With Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza, the number of absences now is likely to be far greater.

ISRAEL WAR AGAINST TERROR

Israel and the US need to get tough on Egypt. Cairo has turned a blind eye to Hamas's tunneling and shipments of weapons over and under its border.

US POWER OVERSEAS

Ike carrier heads home as Houthi attacks continue in the Red Sea. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, the carrier leading America's response to the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, is returning home after an over eight-month deployment in combat that the Navy says is its most intense since World War II.

LATEST BIDEN FAILURE – Yemen's Houthis undeterred by US campaign to halt Red Sea attacks. Recent attacks have underscored Biden's weak response and the group's ability to pose a sustained threat.

OTHER BIDEN FAILURE – US military looks for West Africa ‘Plan B' after Niger ousting. The top U.S. general is making a rare trip to Africa to discuss ways to preserve some of the U.S. presence in West Africa after Niger decided to kick out the U.S. military in favor of partnering with Russia in a major setback for Washington.

CHINA THREAT

Philippines says it won't back down, but won't start a war, after clash with Chinese Coast Guard. The Filipino president said Sunday his country would not yield to “any foreign power” after Chinese forces injured Filipino navy personnel and damaged at least two military boats with machetes, axes and hammers in a clash in the disputed South China Sea.

Weapons of choice in China's territorial disputes? Axes, knives, ‘jostling.' When Chinese forces violently intercepted Philippine naval ships Wednesday in a disputed area of the South China Sea, they didn't use handguns or rifles, let alone the more high-tech weaponry now widely seen in modern conflicts.

US Marine Corps plans new littoral regiment on Guam in a ‘few years,' commandant says. This, to “counter Chinese aggression” in the region.

Batteries as a military enabler. Batteries could quietly tilt the balance of military power. While mainland China's lithium-ion storage batteries are useful for meeting economic and decarbonization goals in the West, its battery complex poses potential security risks, especially in the event of war over Taiwan.

India boosts defense ties with Bangladesh as it tries to become a counterweight to China. They signed agreements for expanding cooperation in maritime security, ocean economy, space, and telecommunication sectors, as New Delhi tries to present itself as a regional power and a counterweight to China.

IRAN THREAT

France would support Lebanese Armed Forces in southern border security mission: Official. Paris “must be ready” to aid Beirut should it attempt a historic deployment to secure Lebanon's southern border, where Hezbollah could play spoiler.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Pentagon: Ukraine may fire long range US missiles deeper into Russia in self-defense.

EU approves up to €1.4B military aid to Ukraine from Russian frozen assets.

Russia is punching back at NATO in the shadows. The U.S. urges its alliance partners to expose and blunt the Kremlin's strategy of surreptitious attacks.

Meet Mad Vlad's Afrika Korps. Where are Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery and his British Eighth Army when you need them?

Russia is storing up a crime wave when its war on Ukraine ends. Russia has sent so many men to join its war in Ukraine that crime levels in the country fell soon after the invasion began. Now their return is starting to unleash a wave of offending.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

Roosevelt carrier arrives in South Korea in show of force to the North. A nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier arrived Saturday in South Korea for a three-way exercise involving Japan as they step up military training to cope with North Korean threats, which have escalated following a security pact with Russia.

Russia and North Korea's military deal formalizes a bustling arms trade. Russian trade data shows how cash-strapped Pyongyang is transporting shipping containers to munitions-hungry Moscow to help it sustain its war against Ukraine.

SPACE THREAT

US allies cite progress but say more needed for collective response to space threats. US Space Command's recently realigned and renamed Joint Commercial Operations cell is one example of successful joint operations, agreed the four European space leaders.
