NATIONAL SECURITY

THIS IS SERIOUS – WAKE UP, BIDEN – US nuclear commander warns of deterrence ‘crisis' against Russia and China. The head of U.S. Strategic Command, which oversees the nuclear arsenal, warned Congress Wednesday that Washington faces a heightened nuclear deterrence risk when it comes to Russia and China.

BEING WILLING TO USE IS ONLY DETERRENCE – Time to stop wobbling and learn to love the bomb. Many experts have assessed that Putin is capable of using a nuclear weapon and may be increasingly inclined to do so. He certainly believes there is a level of escalation that the West will not match. He may be right. All the more reason that serious thought should be given on how to deter Putin from taking such a step.

HOMELAND SECURITY

BIDEN CREATES SUCKING CHEST WOUND, PUTS ON BANDAID – Mexico will take back more Cubans and Nicaraguans expelled by U.S. The deal is potentially significant because the Mexican government has more latitude to carry out deportation flights to Cuba and Nicaragua, nations whose frosty relations with Washington severely limit the United States' ability to return their citizens. The number of Cuban and Nicaraguan migrants detained along the U.S. southern border has hit record levels in recent months, part of a wider migration surge under President Biden.

CHINA THREAT

MAKE CHINA PAY – Taiwan's military is training for urban warfare against Chinese troops. Here's the kind of fight they're facing. Taiwan is home to about 23 million people, most of whom live in several major cities where a war for the island would be won. China's military has superiority on pretty much every level, but Taiwan has the advantage of defense, which its military is betting on.

RUSSIA THREAT

US ramps up training of Ukrainian forces. The U.S. military is ramping up its weapons training for Ukrainian forces, with hundreds now being trained on artillery systems, drones and radars, defense officials said Wednesday.

ESCALATING AND FAILING – Russia pounds Ukraine, targeting supply of Western arms. Russian forces pounded targets across Ukraine, taking aim at supply lines for foreign weapons in the west and intensifying an offensive in the east, as the European Union moved Wednesday to further punish Moscow for the war with a proposed ban on oil imports.

Anti-Putin Russians Are Leaving, With a Push from the Kremlin. Many Russians who are designated “foreign agents” by the government view it as another form of repression that makes living in the country, or returning to it, untenable.

Ukraine attracts fighters from the Middle East. The war in Ukraine has attracted thousands of foreign fighters battling on both sides from around the world including the Middle East. Some call them mercenaries, while others call them volunteers. So why are they joining the fight?

NORTH KOREA THREAT

N. Korea slams South's new leader as ‘pro-U.S., confrontational.' A major North Korean propaganda website denounced on Thursday South Korea's incoming president Yoon Suk-yeol, who has vowed to take a tougher line on weapons tests by Pyongyang, describing him as “pro-United States”, and “confrontational.”

North Korea fires ballistic missile amid rising animosities. The launch comes days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to bolster his nuclear arsenal and threatened to use them against rivals.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

BILL CLINTON'S 1996 SHORT-TERM PEACEKEEPING FORCE – Berlin says it will work for EUFOR Bosnia extension amid Russia concerns. Germany will work for an extension of the EU's peacekeeping mission in Bosnia as concerns mount about instability spilling over from the Ukraine war, but has not yet decided whether to provide troops, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said.

UNSTABLE NUKE POWER – Rising Violence by Separatists Adds to Pakistan's Lethal Instability. A government plagued by volatility is trying to quell a separatist movement in Baluchistan while also fighting other insurgencies and striving for economic development.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

Air Force destroys target vessel with ship-killing JDAM. The Air Force last week tested its new ship-killing guided bomb by using it to destroy a full-scale target vessel in the Gulf of Mexico.
