Large explosions of apparent Ukrainian origin rocked one of Russia's largest airbases earlier today.
Saki Air Base in Crimea, which Russia has occupied since 2014, endured multiple explosions as video footage from panicked beachgoers and other startled civilians shows.
The Russian government is characteristically saying that the explosions resulted from an accident that set off aviation munitions. But informed observers noted that the explosions occurred at different locations on the base, possibly both munitions storage sites, which would be extraordinarily careless, even by Russian military standards.
Few believed them — even before Ukrainian sources speaking to The New York Times claimed the explosions, that pummeled one of their enemies' largest airbases, were their government's handiwork.

Russia has used Saki Air Base to attempt to achieve air superiority over the Black Sea and Southern Ukraine. It's unclear how the Ukrainians struck a target far behind enemy lines. One artillery/weapons specialist on Twitter speculated that they have begun using long-range surface-to-surface missiles, also known as ATACMS.
Notably, the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) used by the United States and recently deployed to Ukraine by our government in significant numbers can fire ATACMS.

Local witnesses told the Reuters agency that they heard at least 12 blasts, beginning at about 15:20 local time (12:20 GMT).

Moscow refused to speculate on the origin of the blast and Kyiv has not taken responsibility.
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister, Iryna Vereshchuk, wrote on Telegram that “today's explosions in Novofedorivka are another reminder of who Crimea belongs to. Because it is Ukraine”.
And Ukraine's military posted a sarcastic statement on Facebook which hinted at the sinking of the Moskva warship and other military setbacks, reminding Russia of its “fire safety rules and the ban of smoking in unsettled places”.
In his nightly address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said “Crimea is Ukrainian, and we will never give it up.”
He added that the war “began with Crimea and must end with Crimea – with its liberation.”

NATO and the US either needs to give Ukraine the means to destroy Russian bases and equipment, regardless of where they might be, or just pull out and leave them to sink or swim on their own. Ukraine has proven that with enough of the right weapons they can hurt the Russian invaders and repel this invasion.
