Defiant Border Official Resigns Amid Heightened Pressure from Admin. Officials

-

A top Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) official caved to administration pressure and resigned over the weekend, dealing another blow to the ongoing effort to curb the ongoing crisis.

Chris Magnus, who has been leading the border agency since December, was reportedly told by Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to either “resign or be fired” after criticizing higher-ups' ineffectiveness at the border.

Magnus told The Los Angeles Times that his defiance of an order not to meet with border patrol in El Paso this week coupled with his refusal to extend a “retention” bonus for Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz, prompted last Tuesday's quit-or-be-fired ultimatum from Mayorkas

“I resigned because I believe this decision provides me with the best path for advancing my commitment to professional, innovative, and community-engaged ,” Magnus said. “I appreciate having had this opportunity to serve and to work with many dedicated colleagues.”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Magnus' resignation in a statement to NPR.

“President Biden appreciates Commissioner Magnus' nearly forty years of service and the contributions he made to police reform during his tenure as police chief in three U.S. cities,” said Jean-Pierre. “The President thanks Mr. Magnus for his service at CBP and wishes him well.”

In a message to the border patrol workforce Sec. Mayorkas also confirmed the resignation and said employees would immediately report to deputy commissioner Troy Miller until a new director is named.

Last week, Politico first published a report revealing inside pressure with the ultimate goal to force Magnus to resign.

Lawmakers reportedly accused Magnus of skipping White House events, falling asleep in meetings, preoccupying himself with the agency's culture, and not doing enough to stem the flow of illegal immigrants under the 's southern .

Since President took office and effectively opened the border an estimated 5 million migrants have illegally crossed into the .

  1. Myorkas needs to be gone for failing to take care of the border and our border czar is a joke. But then there had to be a scapegoat to make it look as though something at the border is being done.

  2. Wow, we are waist-deep in bovine country juice harp twang. This reminds me of Joseph Valachi going to jail for carrying out Don Vito Genoveses orders.Ya-all caint hep it yous spose ta believes this cow patty stuff. Still, the numbers of illegals get stronger everday? Processing time is shorter. Mayorkas needs put behind bars now. Our government actually has the nerve to try and pull this off?

  3. I think I would have had to have been fired. If I was working in a key position before Biden got there. Everyone knows what is going on. Democrats not going to the border doesn`t change a thing. Their border policies in place only expedite illegals into the USA. What Mayorkas said was he was working on things to speed them up. This is outright treason and he and the guilty should draw the death penalty.
