A federal judge in Texas has ordered Alex Jones to liquidate his personal assets to compensate the families of Sandy Hook victims. The order, issued by Judge Christopher Lopez on Friday, marks a crucial step in the long-running legal battle involving the conspiracy theory driven media personality.
The Ruling
Lopez's decision mandates that Jones' personal assets be sold off to satisfy the substantial debt he owes to the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. Friday's ruling follows a series of defamation lawsuits filed against Jones, who repeatedly claimed that the 2012 massacre, which claimed the lives of 26 people – mostly children – was a hoax.
In addition to targeting Jones's personal assets, Judge Lopez is still deliberating on the fate of his company, Infowars, which is undergoing a separate bankruptcy case. The bankruptcy proceedings will determine how much of Infowars' assets can be used to further compensate the plaintiffs.
Jones owes nearly $1.5 billion in damages to the families of the Sandy Hook victims.
