Republican Senator Achieves Breakthrough Deal on Immigration Reform – Betrays GOP Base?

-

Two U.S. senators have reached a bipartisan compromise on immigration reform, signaling a breakthrough in the and a possible face-off in the House of Representatives.

U.S. Sens. , D-Ariz., and , R-N.C., announced the details of their compromise earlier today.

The senators have disseminated an informational document to their colleagues with a rundown of the biggest points.

They include:

  • A pathway to citizenship for two million recipients, aka “Dreamers.”
  • More resources to streamline the asylum seeker approval process and the expedited removal of migrants who don't qualify.
  • A continuation of the Trump-era Title 42 border COVID regulation forcing would-be asylum seekers to remain in Mexico (for the next 12 months while the reforms are implemented).

However, such a proposal would face strong headwinds in the House, where Rep. has said he will oppose any amnesty — if he becomes speaker.

The Washington Post‘s Greg Sargent reports:

The idea behind this compromise is this. It gives Democrats protections for 2 million Dreamers and beefed up defenses of the due process rights of some migrants. It gives Republicans faster removal of migrants who fail to qualify for asylum to prevent them from remaining in the country, a continued restriction on applications for the next year and more border security.

The boost in resources would hopefully reduce the strain at the border, by moving migrants through the asylum-application process more quickly. The processing centers would be temporary detention centers, but more lawyers would be present to enable more robust representation.

Do you think Democrats will get 10 GOP senators to advance these reforms out of the Senate? What about McCarthy? Would he fold as speaker? Tell us in the comments below!

  1. This is why nothing EVER gets fixed! The CLUELESS Republicans “work with” the conniving, power-mad Demmunists and offer up something that contains SOME attempts at “reform,” wrapped around an unacceptable POISON PILL created by the Demmunists. So, to get Title 42 reinstated and STOP the mass invasion, we have to grant AMNESTY to TWO MILLION illegals? THIS is just another way to help the conniving Demmunists get what they want at the expense of the rest of us!

    • AND how, exactly, are these millions who have been scattered throughout the USA going to be located? AND, the illegals are already receiving free taxpayer benefits of all sorts; AND, our native born citizen children have dreams too which we should be supporting. Sick of this lawlessness and stick8ng a thumb in our collective eyes. Grew up in the . 50’s & 60’s- cannot belueve how our country, culture, and traditions have been mogrified- disgraceful.

  2. Here they go again. This is essentially the same ‘trick’ the dems pulled on Reagan to get ‘amnesty’ for a bunch of illegals in exchange for ‘securing the border’ – which they NEVER did and will not do this time either. Tillis is at best a squishy republican as evidenced by his willingness to fall for the same trick.
Seems like the old adage about not learning from history strikes again,
As far as the daca ‘kids’ – IIRC there are already mechanisms in place for them to seek naturalization which very few (if any) have availed themselves of,

  3. There should be strict requirements during a lengthy period when they may remain in the Country (only so long as they continue to conform to those requirements) before they qualify for citizenship. If they do not continue to conform to the requirements, they must be immediately deported. Those requirements should include registration with the Federal government as an alien, NO government financial assistance, maintaining a job, learning English, and NO involvement in any illegal activity. Also, any person who has been deported and has reentered the Country illegally should never qualify to remain the Country legally or to be considered for citizenship.

  4. once again these moron republicans shoot themselves in the foot and fall for this crap, how stupid are these people,I left the Rep.party years ago because of their
stupidity and became an independent I see by this they have not changed one
    bit.

  5. COS – Convention Of the States is the answer. And the best part of all is the cost. How much, you ask? Just your vote. How can you beat a deal like that?!?!?

Stop thinking/hoping/wishing that the government is going to fix itself. It ain’t.

  6. The American people should not be forced to select the lesser of 2 evils because the current ADMINISTRATION COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY MESSED UP THE SITUATION AT THE BORDER. The dems should personally be held accountable for their actions sanctioning millions of non Americans to break our laws. It is not acceptable for the powers that be to take the law into their own hands without having been approved of by the American People. Start with slowjoe, Nasty Nan, Osama, Nasty Nan and the Hill, and work your way down from there.JAIL TIME FOR TRAITORS…
