George Santos Steps Down From Committee Assignments

Embattled New York Congressman George Santos (R) is stepping down from committee assignments.

Rep. Santos informed House GOP colleagues of his decision on Tuesday in a conference meeting.

According to The Hill, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said that Santos informed the Conference he would recuse himself from committees “temporarily” until “things get settled.”

“And then he asked that we all support him when everything settles down for him to serve on committees,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) told reporters after the meeting.

Greene said Santos also told colleagues he was recusing himself amid the controversy surrounding him.

The House GOP Steering Committee, the panel of Republican leaders who assign committees, had assigned Santos to the Small Business Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee earlier this month.

Now, the Long Island representative-elect is officially under investigation for potential criminal wrongdoings that may have arisen as a result of lies about his résumé, philanthropy and even his heritage.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly — a Republican — said the investigation into the “stunning” fabrications was necessary on behalf of the people of New York's 3rd Congressional District.

Per NPR:

“The residents of Nassau County and other parts of the third district must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress,” she said. “If a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”

Santos' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
