Liz Cheney Loses Reelection

-

According to Decision Desk HQ, incumbent Republican (R-Wyo.) has lost her reelection to represent 's At-Large U.S. House seat.

With 4% of the vote reporting, Harriet Hageman leads the Republican primary over Cheney 57%-41%.

Cheney incurred former President 's wrath when she voted to impeach Trump after blaming him for inciting the deadly U.S. Capitol riot.

“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the of his office and his oath to the Constitution,” Cheney declared in a statement before announcing “I will vote to impeach the President.”

At the time she was the third-highest-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives.

Harriet Hageman, a former Cheney family friend who has now vanquished her, is all but guaranteed to win the November general election. Trump won Wyoming's three electoral votes in 2020 by a whopping 43-point margin.

Even Cheney's closest supporters acknowledged that her only hope to stay competitive involved winning over large numbers of Democrats and independent voters. But if there was a big enough Republican vote, then she could forget it, as former Wyoming Gov. Mike Sullivan explained in an interview last week.

Hagman, 59, spent most of her career as a natural resources attorney, battling environmental regulations seen as adversely impacting Wyoming's agriculture, public lands and waterways.

's Chris Cillizza highlights her unlikely path to becoming Cheney's political rival:

The venom in the Cheney-Hageman race comes alive in conversations with voters, dueling television ads and reports of stolen yard signs. Their relationship wasn't always acrimonious, when Hageman stood alongside Cheney and showered her with praise during Cheney's first bid for in 2016.

“I am proud to introduce my friend Liz Cheney,” Hageman said then. “I know Liz Cheney is a proven, courageous, constitutional conservative, someone who has the education, the background and experience to fight effectively for Wyoming on a national stage.”

That was more than six years ago — a lifetime in .

Earlier this summer, Trump traveled to Casper for a rally with Hageman where the duo slammed the incumbent representative.

Speaking before a packed house, Trump said, “Liz, you're fired.” He added, “Wyoming deserves a congresswoman who stands up for you and your values, not one who spends all of her time putting you down and going after your president in the most vicious way possible.”

Since then, things haven't gotten any easier.

Still, the scion of Republican royalty, before the age of Trump, will remain in the spotlight as the most outspoken of Trump's opponents. Indeed, with the exception of herself and Adam Kinzinger, every Republican who voted to impeach Trump sheepishly fled from their vote when it became apparent the GOP base wasn't with them.

Cheney undoubtedly knew she was in a losing proposition straightway but decided to go down fighting. And regardless of tonight's results, her other campaign, portraying Trump as uniquely unqualified to become president again, will continue.

  1. Adios, Liz… I haven’t ever understood why you did what you did, but I wish you well. I don’t like you, nor understand you, but God compels me to wish you well. God Bless.(I would not offer this to Obama, Biden, any Clinton’s, Garland…. et. all). Seriously Liz, you have some soul searching to do. Bless you in your endeavors.

  2. Don’t hold your breath until Cheney stops bitching, whining and complaining about Donald Trump. Her next step will probably to become a socialist that’s nothing other than a communist masquerading as a democrat. On top of that, she’ll no doubt get her fantastic pension we in the real world can only dream about.

  3. YO, BIATCH!!! Now that you have been banished, just GO HOME and count cows with daddy!!! We CERTAINLY don’t need you no more!!!

  4. She didn’t “go down fighting”. She went down, AND spent the last year or two, LYING. Trump did not even come CLOSE to “inciting an insurrection”.
She has mental health issues and needs help. She should apply for a staff job in Pelosi’s office.

  5. With 4% of the voters in, Cheney was losing by 57%..that isn’t a “loss”..there is another word but I will need to think about what word.

  6. Watch her run for president in 2024 although right now it will be tough to get enough signatures, there are enough other RINOs to pull off getting her in the primaries where she will work against Trump if nothing else. You know how sometimes you tell yourself, I’m not going to get into it but you still do? Same thing with this spoiled brat. Pride still goeth before a fall. And it seems that while democrats can put their constituents beliefs aside and vote with the party to destroy America, Republicans fight among themselves to make sure they are never united about anything. Even the end of their party and the country they supposedly love by the forces of racism and hate, democrats.
