Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former chief medical advisor to the president, is recuperating at home after being hospitalized due to the West Nile virus, a spokesperson confirmed on Saturday. Fauci, who played a central role in the Trump and Biden administrations' response to the COVID-19 pandemic, was admitted to the hospital for approximately six days.
The West Nile virus, which is transmitted through mosquito bites, can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, rash, body aches and diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In severe cases, it can lead to more serious neurological conditions. Currently, there are no specific vaccines or antiviral treatments available for West Nile virus, making management of the disease largely supportive.
Fauci, who retired in December 2022 after decades of service as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and as chief medical advisor to President Biden, was recently called to testify before House Republicans regarding his role in the COVID-19 pandemic response.
According to the CDC, about 1,000 Americans are currently hospitalized with severe cases of West Nile virus. The prognosis for those infected varies, with most people recovering fully, though some may experience lingering symptoms or complications.
