The pro-gun advocacy group Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) is calling out Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D) for a move recently made by his office.
Earlier this year, Ferguson handpicked Ben Carr to be Washington's Assistant Attorney General. Carr has a long history of anti-gun advocacy and even now serves as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Gun Responsibility Foundation, also known as the Alliance.
According to a statement released by SAF this week, “The Alliance filed a motion to intervene as a defendant in a federal lawsuit filed by SAF and the Firearms Policy Coalition challenging Washington State's ban on so-called “large capacity magazines” in which Ferguson is named as one of the defendants, in his official capacity.”
SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb wasted no time questioning the move, asking “why should the Alliance think Ferguson needs their help to defend the ban…After all, they've got their own man working in the Attorney General's office,” Gottlieb said, referring to Carr.
“Bob Ferguson has politicized and weaponized the Attorney General's office,” Gottlieb said, “and having a senior official from a gun prohibition advocacy organization on staff while he is a defendant in a federal lawsuit challenging a gun control law he will defend appears highly questionable, to say the least.”
When SAF filed the lawsuit, Ferguson proclaimed the group's challenge to the state's ban would not succeed.
“If he's so confident,” Gottlieb questioned, “Why does he need the help of a billionaire-backed, radical advocacy organization?”
To sum it all up, Gottlieb called the attorney general's move “a slap in the face to every Washington State gun owner” and added that “the public should be outraged.”
The lawsuit in question was filed in June, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. It is known as Sullivan, et.al. v. Ferguson, et.al.
In the filed suit, SAF and the Firearms Policy Coalition state that sheriffs in a multitude of Washington State's counties are openly infringing upon the second amendment rights of their citizens by banning the “manufacturing, importing, distributing, selling, or offering for sale ammunition magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.”
