Two Republicans Side With Democrats to Ban ‘Assault Weapons’

-

In a last-ditch effort in the final moments before the House left for its August Recess, Democrats pushed their radical agenda even further and voted to ban “assault weapons”

The legislation, H.R. 1808 — contains the following provisions:

This bill makes it a to knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device (LCAFD).

The prohibition does not apply to a firearm that is (1) manually operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide action; (2) permanently inoperable; (3) an antique; or (4) a rifle or shotgun specifically identified by make and model.

The bill also exempts from the prohibition the following, with respect to a SAW or LCAFD:

importation, sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession related to certain efforts, or authorized tests or experiments;
importation, sale, transfer, or possession related to securing nuclear materials; and
possession by a retired law enforcement officer.
The bill permits continued possession, sale, or transfer of a grandfathered SAW, which must be securely stored. A licensed gun dealer must conduct a background check prior to the sale or transfer of a grandfathered SAW between private parties.

Passed by the House last night, H.R. 1808 would ban America's most popular sporting rifles, such as AR-15 style weapons and almost all semi-automatic firearms in the near future — but does not apply to such devices already in an individual's possession.

Notably, even the AP Stylebook posted earlier this month that even the term “assault rifle” is a highly politicized leftist one.

Two Republicans broke with their party and sided with the Democrats, voting in favor of the legislation — Brian Fitzpatrick of 's 1st District and Chris Jacobs of New York's 27th District.

The final vote was 217-213. It was cast after 6:30 p.m. on the last day that the House is in session before the August recess of over a month, when members work in their districts — not in Washington, D.C.

Five Democrats voted against the ban. That group was made up of the following members: Henry Cuellar (TX-28), Ron Kind (WI-03), Kurt Schrader (OR-05), Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) and Jared Golden (ME-02).

One Republican was also recorded as not voting — Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16).

Congressman Buddy Carter of Georgia's 1st Congressional District responded to the actions of Democrats — starting with Speaker Pelosi — with the following tweet highlighting the wording of the Second Amendment.

In a statement released yesterday evening, Jason Ouimet of the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) bashed ' passage of the bill:

“Barely a month after the 's landmark decision in NYSRPA v. Bruen, gun control advocates in Congress are spearheading an assault upon the freedoms and civil liberties of law-abiding Americans. The promises made in HR 1808 are nothing short of a lie based on willful ignorance of the disastrous 1994 Clinton Gun Ban which failed to produce any significant drop in crime. With more than 24 million potentially-banned firearms in common use, these draconian restrictions fall in blatant opposition to the Supreme Court's rulings in BruenCaetano v. , and DC v. Heller. Their refusal to recognize this reality places everyone at risk. Any legitimate attempt to address our nation's surge in violent crime cannot commence until anti-gun legislators step away from the radicals who defund our police departments, support prosecutors who refuse to prosecute dangerous criminals, and promote no cash bail policies that have turned once proud communities into a playground of lawlessness and fear.”

This move is just the latest Washington attack on law-abiding gun owners. It comes after Congress moved to greatly limit the ability of 18 to 21-year-olds to purchase and also expanded background checks last month before the July 4th recess.

  1. This kind of Legislation is what will feed the Red Wave in November, keep up the good work Lib’s

  2. Democrats and some Republicans are useless to America. The voters who vote for these traitors are just freeloaders. Hang them all for treason.

  3. Isn’t it a good thing that the loopy libs in the house can’t make up laws on their own? Without some major changes it’s unlikely the senate will pass this bill, or at least they shouldn’t. The left wing democrats keep providing us with more and more reasons to purge all of them from our government starting this November, and then do it again in November 2024.For the continuation of our Republic we better get rid of or else we will lose no only our country but also most of our freedoms. That in turn will be the beginning of our second American revolution to rid ourselves of an unjust government. The internal fighting will divide this country even more and we will see the end of what we had known as the United States of America.

  4. It still has to pass the Senate and it’s passage there is doubtful. This is totally unconstitutional as there is no way the citizens of this country could stop a domestic or foreign invasion with bolt action rifles, which I am sure that there is some Chinese influence behind some of these votes.

  5. Sorry nancy. We WILL NOT obey un-Constitutional things that violate our GOD given, CONSTITUTIONALLY guaranteed 2A rights. As you will soon find out.

  6. Good thing fitzpatrick isn’t my rep. I would do everything in my power to get him voted out of office.

    • Go ahead and do whatever you can to get him voted out of office even if he is not your Representative. Volunteer to work for his opponent, volunteer with a recall campaign. If you live someplace too far away from his district to help out in person, offer to make phone calls. Donate to his opponent. Write letters to the newspapers in his district. There must be something you can do. Alternatively, work on the campaign of somebody who will neutralize Fitzgerald’s vote on future bills. We absolutely must stop the anti-2nd Amendment crowd. If they get their way, we will all become sitting ducks to criminals and tyrants, both foreign and domestic.

  7. Obviously the Democrats and Rinos have no respect for the law, THE CONSTITUTION of THE UNITED STATES and the Decisions of THE SUPREME COURT, that is, unless the particular law or decision furthers their agenda.
There is a word for this: EVIL!

  8. Any member of Congress who knowingly votes for a bill that is later determined to be unconstitutional should be immediately expelled and deemed unfit for future office.

  9. These two Republicans shouldn’t even be counted. Their states are two of the worse for crooks having guns. You let them out on the streets to get them from gangs and dirt like themselves, help change that.
