An Army veteran and longtime Trump supporter who was brutally attacked outside his California home last week has died from his injuries, adding a tragic new chapter to a case that has already drawn national attention.
Kerry Sheron, 69, died Sunday night after remaining in critical condition for several days following the violent assault outside his Escondido home, according to his wife, Maria Sheron.
Sheron had become well known in the area because of his heavily decorated property — often referred to locally as the “Trump House” — which displayed large American flags, pro-Trump signs, and patriotic messages. The home had generated years of online discussion and neighborhood complaints, but supporters say Sheron himself was deeply committed to free expression and American values.

Authorities say the attack occurred around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday outside Sheron’s home near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. Police responding to reports of an assault found Sheron suffering from severe injuries, while a good Samaritan who intervened was also hurt during the incident. Investigators later arrested 32-year-old Thomas Butler nearby. Butler had already pleaded not guilty to charges including attempted first-degree murder, elder abuse causing great bodily injury, battery, and making criminal threats. He is currently being held without bail.
Authorities have not yet announced whether the charges against Butler will be upgraded following Sheron’s death.
The development follows ALN’s earlier reporting on the attack and the broader questions surrounding increasingly heated political tensions across the country. Investigators have not publicly stated a motive in the case, and authorities have not identified the assault as politically motivated. But the attack quickly drew attention because of the home’s unmistakable political identity and because of previous reports of hostility surrounding the property.
Despite losing her husband after what authorities described as a brutal attack, Maria Sheron spoke with compassion even while mourning.
“I feel a lot of pain in my heart,” she said.
She also expressed sympathy for the family of the man accused of killing her husband.
“I’m feeling bad for the mother for the guy who do that, because he ruined his life,” Maria said. “I’m feeling bad for her, but the stuff he did to my husband is terrible.”
Outside the home on Monday morning, friends, neighbors, and supporters gathered waving American flags while others left flowers and additional flags in tribute.

Neighbor Jim Gillie remembered Sheron as a man whose political beliefs never outweighed his broader principles.
“Kerry was a Trump supporter, but he was a patriot first, and he was a strong believer in freedom of speech, and when people would approach him and give him any guff over his opinions, he didn’t let it get under his skin; he would just say they’re entitled to free speech, just like I am,” Gillie said.
As supporters gathered outside the home Sheron spent years turning into a visible expression of his beliefs, many described him not simply as a political activist, but as a veteran and patriot who felt strongly that Americans should be free to express their views without fear.
Now, what began as an attempted murder case may soon become a homicide investigation. It is currently unclear if Butler’s charges will change after Sheron’s death.
A GoFundMe has been created to support the Sheron family.
The incident comes amid a broader national backdrop of politically charged confrontations and violence. In recent weeks, conservative media and activist circles have pointed to the reported attack on Turning Point USA reporter Savannah Hernandez during a separate confrontation as part of a growing pattern of aggression directed at individuals associated with right-leaning political movements.
