This is a post we made in September of last year and we thought it wise to bring it back out. Note that for Omicron there are only a few changes:

The following points were all true before Omicron:

• Cloth masks don’t work
• Asymptomatic testing isn’t effective
• Closing schools doesn’t prevent deaths
• N95s aren’t appropriate for kids
• The vaccine doesn’t stop the spread. Please stop pretending these are new!

Two years into the pandemic and it is still clear that masking children is an ineffective policy not supported by research or data. We’ve provided two sources for each claim below. H/T to the amazing @Robber_Baron_ for this guide!

1. “Our data indicate that children are at far greater risk of critical illness from influenza than from COVID-19.” Source (JAMA Network)
2. “Children and young people remain at low risk from COVID-19 mortality.” Source (OSF PrePrint)
3. “…children are not the main drivers of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.” Source (CMAJ Group)
4. Children rarely transmit infection to others and more frequently have an asymptomatic or mild course compared to adults. Source (Journal of Medical Virology)
