In a Senate hearing that could rival any high-stakes drama, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) took the acting Secret Service director, Ronald Rowe Jr., to task over the shocking attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. It was a spectacle you don't want to miss.
The Showdown at the Senate
Picture this: the room was tense, with every eye on Hawley and Rowe. The new acting director of the U.S. Secret Service and FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate, were in the hot seat, facing a joint Senate oversight hearing on the assassination attempt that left Trump grazed by a bullet, one supporter, Corey Comperatore, dead and two others critically injured.
Hawley's Fury Unleashed
Hawley, known for his no-nonsense style, didn't hold back. He systematically dismantled the disgraced acting director after forcing him to admit that, unbelievably, no one has been punished for the security lapse. “The former president was shot! fire somebody!” Hawley exclaimed. “I can't believe you would say you are being ‘persecuted.' We've got people who are dead!”

At first, Rowe calmly explained that he was waiting for the results of the FBI investigation to determine next steps — but when Hawley barked back that there were obvious failures because the “former president was shot” … Rowe snapped.
He fired back with a reference to the JFK assassination in Dallas, barking … “Sir, this could have been our Texas School Book Depository. I have lost sleep over that for the last 17 days, just like you!!!”
Hawley interjected, “Then fire somebody!” … which only got Rowe more heated.
Shortly after, Hawley's time came to an end. The hearing continued, but Rowe's entire demeanor had changed.
A Resignation and the Aftermath
So far, only former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned and only after a disastrous appearance before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. Tuesday's hearing marks the first time a Secret Service member appeared before Congress since her abrupt resignation.
Cheatle herself had admitted that this was “the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades.” Lawmakers from both parties called for her resignation, yet she pledged not to step down. Even more baffling was her refusal to answer questions about whether the Secret Service had turned down requests for additional resources for Trump's security detail in the lead-up to the assassination attempt.
The Drone Controversy
Adding fuel to the fire, Hawley disclosed information from an unidentified whistleblower after Cheatle provided unsatisfactory answers. The whistleblower claimed that local law enforcement and their partners had offered drone surveillance to the Secret Service before the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Yet the Secret Service reportedly refused their help the night before the event. This bombshell was detailed in a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
