UPDATE, May 22, 2024 (10:25 a.m. EST):

A spokesperson for the United States Capitol Police informed reporters that the department's Hazardous Incident Response Division had cleared the package, confirming that “it contained two vials of blood.”

NBC News correspondent Dasha Burns posted to X that three sources have informed her the Republican National Committee's headquarters in Washington, D.C., are on lockdown until further notice.

According to preliminary reports, multiple vials of blood were sent to the GOP's party headquarters on this morning. Authorities, including a hazmat team and a bomb squad, are onsite.

The building is located across the street from the Cannon House Office Building, which were the first congressional offices constructed at the turn of the 20th century to relieve overcrowding in the U.S. Capitol.

A notice issued by U.S. Capitol Police tersely stated: “Staff and other personnel are directed to AVOID THIS AREA until further notice.”
