ANALYSIS – She might, and that should make Republicans very afraid. Still, the newly anointed Democratic presidential candidate could choose another “moderate” Democrat man, an even more leftist politician or even a woman as her running mate.
Harris launched her campaign last Sunday after Biden bowed to pressure from his own party to step aside, leaving a historically compressed timeline for her to select before next month's Democratic National Convention.
Democrats could make her its nominee as soon as Aug. 1 in a virtual vote and could formalize the nomination of her running mate soon after.
So, Harris has less than one week to choose.
As Yahoo News put it:
Welcome to the veepstakes. It's a time-honored Washington tradition. Speculation swirls. Names emerge. Pundits pontificate. Vetting begins. Ultimately, a new political partnership is born.
While much of the political conversation has centered on four names – former astronaut and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, some also consider Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg a long shot contender.
Team Trump should be praying that it will be him.
Others point to an all “girl power” team including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, or perhaps Gina Raimundo, the current secretary of Commerce.
Casting an even wider net (or simply adding to the smoke), Harris' team has reportedly requested information from about a dozen officials.
While many had speculated Whitmer and California Gov. Gavin Newsom would also be considered, both have withdrawn their names from consideration. And then there are the polls.
As Yahoo news reported:
According to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll, which was conducted from July 19 to 22, Democrats don't have a clear favorite for the job — yet. When shown a list of potential Harris running mates and asked to “select all” they would “approve of,” a plurality of voters who identify as Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents answered “not sure” (30%) or “none of the above” (6%).
The next-highest finishers were California Gov. Gavin Newsom, (30%), Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (25%) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (24%) — the most familiar names on the list.
Less prominent — but potentially more realistic — Democratic contenders such as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (24%), Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly (18%), Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (15%) and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (11%) brought up the rear.
Josh Shapiro would be a solid choice. Seemingly “moderate” by Democrat standards and relatively uncontroversial in his must-win state of Pennsylvania. However, Shapiro likely would not accept the position.
Losing with Harris in 2024 would damage his chances to run for president in 2028. Other top Democrat contenders would also prefer to wait for a better chance in 2028.
That's why, according to one former Harris adviser, Mark Kelly, who I noted as a serious choice a few days ago, may now be leading the pack of potential Harris running mates.
Fox News reported:
“You need someone who's moderate, obviously, a white male, and I would say she needs someone from a border state,” Ashley Etienne, a former Harris communications director, told NBC News.
“I think her choosing a white male counterbalances her race and her gender in a way that could open her up to peeling off many of those Nikki Haley voters, those disaffected Republicans, independents. And I think it rounds off the ticket in a way that I think feels fresh, feels also forward, but also feels fully aware of where we are as a nation.”
Etienne added: “I think it's Mark Kelly if I had to bet.”
Meanwhile Fox News continued:
Arizona Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is running for Senate in Arizona, said Wednesday Kelly would give Harris a “jolt” if she chose him for vice president.
Kelly's Democratic colleagues in the Senate have spoken highly of him. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., the party's 2016 vice presidential nominee, told NBC News that Kelly would be a “superb” choice for Harris.
Hailing from the key battleground state of Arizona, Kelly could assist Harris in locking up Western states and provide credibility on the border, which he has said is in “crisis.” He has a compelling life story and career, being a former Navy pilot and astronaut. His parents were both police officers, which could help Democrats dodge GOP attacks for being too soft on crime.
One conservative Never-Trumper noted convincingly in USA Today that:
Kelly, a badass astronaut and family man, is a really cool dude. He served as a Navy pilot during Operation Desert Storm and then became an astronaut, flying missions to the International Space Station. He stayed with NASA for 15 years before retiring to care for his wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.
Still, despite his “cool” factor, Kelly brings a lot of liberal baggage. Among other lightning rod issues, he markets gun control as one of his top concerns, as well as expanding abortion access following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This ticket would still be very liberal.

It’s gonna be pretty hard to re-invent Harris. She was arrogantly PUBLIC when running for POTUS against Biden.
And people don’t even know she was NOT raised as an American. She lived in CA for a few years and then moved to French Canada where she was raised as a Canadian by her Indian Mom. Mom was NEVER a US citizen, she never became naturalized. Her dad, French Jamaican, did not become a naturalized US Citizen until DECADES after entering the USA in the 1960’s as a foreign student.
I have to ask, how much US – American history is taught in Canada? Harris never had to pass a US Constitution test in order to greaduate from Grade School or High School.
Then she gets accepted to an all black College, and that is fine. But again, when did she learn anything about AMERICAN HISTORY.
I’m a paralegal – we do way more work on cases than the actualy attornies do. Once we complete the research and file, we hand over to the attorney and they go litigate.
NOTE: Attorneys litigate. Lawyers, like Obama, STUDIED THE LAW. But never litigated. So in other words, he was a TEACHER, not an active litigator. No time in court.
The American public is really ignorant on so many issues.
Kelly was Obama’s pick for POTUS. Now, that the S**t hit the fan, all eyes on Kelly. His BALLOON company contracted TWICE with China. You know, as in SPY balloons.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out, Kelly’s hands have been in the pie as well.
Just b/c he was an astonaut does not make him a saint. Just someone we’d thought would be held to a higher level. So much for that ideal. . . .
Any American astronaut who would even consider being Kamals Harris’s VP would have to be guilty of grand treason, would be the most disgusting sellout in American history, would know that they faced a major, life-long, disgrace, and the hatred of the good, patriotic American people forever after..
