On Thursday, the Supreme Court sided in part with the Republican National Committee (RNC) by allowing parts of an Arizona law to take effect, which tightens proof-of-citizenship requirements for voters.

The justices in a 5-4 vote reinstated a provision that mandates officials reject state voter registration forms if the person did not provide proof of citizenship.
But a majority declined the RNC's demand to also put into effect Arizona's separate prohibition on someone voting for president or by mail without citizenship proof, even if they applied using a federal version of the registration form.
The Biden administration argued the prohibition is preempted by federal law and cautioned the justices against reviving it, but it has not challenged the provision impacting state-level forms.
Conservative Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch indicated they voted to reinstate both provisions.
The ruling comes just before Arizona's ballot printing deadline.
Republicans argue that these proof-of-citizenship requirements are necessary to ensure that only eligible U.S. citizens are voting. They believe that stricter verification processes help maintain the integrity of elections, preventing noncitizens from potentially influencing outcomes. Such legislation is seen by many in the GOP as a way to strengthen trust in the electoral system and avoid concerns about voter fraud.
However, these requirements have been a point of contention, as critics argue that they can make it harder for some legitimate voters, particularly from marginalized communities, to cast their ballots. The debate reflects broader tensions about how to balance election security with voter access.
