The quiet town of Springfield, Ohio, is grappling with a crisis following the arrival of 20,000 Haitian migrants. Residents have called for federal assistance, as the migrant influx strains civil services and causes rising tensions within the community.
At a recent city commission meeting, a frustrated resident claimed migrants were decapitating ducks in public parks for food, accusing local officials of allowing such behavior for financial gain. “They're in the park grabbing up ducks by their neck and cutting their heads off,” the resident said. “Who is getting paid? Like how much money are y'all really getting paid?”
The Haitian migrant population now represents nearly one-third of Springfield's total population, pushing emergency services to the brink. Complaints from residents have surged, especially after a school bus accident involving an undocumented migrant driver, which resulted in the death of a child.
As Breitbart reports:
Residents are becoming uneasy as their town becomes increasingly decorated with Haitian flags, for instance. And some expressed concern when the Haitian flag was raised at City Hall instead of the U.S. flag during the city's flag day celebrations.
But that uneasiness turned to outright anger when an 11-year-old child paid the price with his life for all this immigration. The incident occurred in August of last year when migrant Hermanio Joseph drove a 2010 Honda Odyssey into oncoming traffic causing a school bus filled with children on their way to their first day of school to spin out of control and flip over.
The accident left 11-year-old Aiden Clark dead and a dozen other children injured, some seriously.
The migrant, who had only been here a bit longer than a year, did not have a driver's license and had never passed any state driving exams to obtain one.
The influx began in 2014 but has accelerated over the past four years, with the Haitian population doubling from 10,000 to 20,000 in the town just west of Columbus. Donald Trump's running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) blames the Biden administration for the crisis, calling it a “self-imposed disaster” that is straining resources and hurting job prospects for Ohio citizens.
“This disaster is crushing job prospects, making it harder for Ohio families to find homes, and draining social service programs funded by American taxpayers,” Vance told the Dayton Daily News. He emphasized the need to deport those here illegally and cautioned against allowing temporary residents to stay indefinitely.
The language barrier posed by the new arrivals, most of whom do not speak English, has further complicated local government efforts, affecting everything from education to health care and placing even more pressure on the community's already stretched resources.
