JK Rowling Blasts Emma Watson Over Transgenderism

The already strained relationship between Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and actress Emma Watson appears beyond repair, after Rowling issued a blistering public response Monday to Watson’s recent remarks about their rift over transgender issues.

In a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter), Rowling rebuked Watson for attempting to express affection for her despite openly disagreeing with the author’s views on gender and sex-based rights.

“Adults can’t expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend’s assassination, then assert their right to the former friend’s love, as though the friend was in fact their mother,” Rowling wrote.

A Relationship in Ruins

The comments follow Watson’s appearance on the On Purpose podcast earlier this month, where she acknowledged political differences with Rowling but said she still “treasures” the author, whom she worked closely with during the production of the Harry Potter film franchise.

“It’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with,” Watson said.

Watson, who played Hermione Granger, publicly distanced herself from Rowling in 2020, tweeting her support for the trans community during a period when Rowling was being widely criticized for her views on gender identity and sex-based protections for women.

But Rowling made clear Monday that Watson’s attempt at reconciliation is not welcome.

“Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right — nay, obligation — to critique me and my views in public,” Rowling said, referencing both Watson and Harry Potter lead actor Daniel Radcliffe, who has also denounced Rowling’s views in past statements.

Rowling Calls Out Watson’s “Privilege” and “Ignorance”

Perhaps the most pointed part of Rowling’s statement came in her critique of Watson’s background, which the author contrasted sharply with her own experience of poverty and hardship.

“Emma has so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is,” Rowling wrote. “She’ll never need a homeless shelter. She’s never going to be placed on a mixed-sex public hospital ward… Her ‘public bathroom’ is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door.”

“I wasn’t a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous,” Rowling continued. “I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women’s rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.”

Rowling has long defended her views as a matter of advocating for women’s safety and sex-based legal protections, often in the face of intense backlash from celebrities, activists, and fans. She has also consistently condemned harassment and violence toward trans individuals, while remaining critical of what she sees as ideological overreach and its impact on women’s spaces.

No Apologies Accepted

In 2024, Rowling was asked whether she believed her relationship with Watson or Radcliffe could be salvaged. Her answer then was direct: she didn’t think so — and she didn’t expect or want their apologies.

On Monday, she reiterated that position, making it clear that Watson has every right to express her beliefs, but so does Rowling — and she now plans to speak just as publicly as her critics.

“Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public — but I have the same right, and I’ve finally decided to exercise it,” Rowling concluded.

Culture War Flashpoint

The feud is the latest flashpoint in the ongoing cultural and generational divide over issues of gender, identity, and free expression — one that has particularly affected those associated with the Harry Potter franchise.

Watson’s recent effort to soften the rift may have been well-intentioned, but Rowling’s response shows that reconciliation is unlikely without what the author would consider a more fundamental reckoning with the political and philosophical implications of the dispute.

As Rowling puts it, this is no longer a matter of personal disagreement — but of principle, lived experience, and public accountability.

Talk about the biting the hand that feeds you! Ungrateful stupid children can turn countries into dystopian societies. That is why tyrannical movements always focus on indoctrinating the children. Mao’s Red Guard were students as well as Pol Pots teenage murder squads.
Unfortunately we are front row witnesses to the collapse of western civilization. I can pretty much guarantee people are not going to like what comes next.
