President Donald Trump lashed out at former President Joe Biden after Biden sued the Justice Department to permanently block the public release of roughly 70 hours of audio recordings and transcripts tied to Special Counsel Robert Hur’s classified documents investigation.
Biden filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Washington seeking to prevent the DOJ from releasing recordings and transcripts from interviews he gave to ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer in 2016 and 2017.
The recordings were later obtained during Hur’s investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents after serving as vice president.
Trump Responds on Truth Social
Trump reacted angrily after news of the lawsuit emerged, reposting coverage of the filing on Truth Social and calling his predecessor “A Crooked Politician!!!”
The dispute centers on recordings the Justice Department now plans to release to the Heritage Foundation and the House Judiciary Committee by June 15 following Freedom of Information Act litigation and congressional requests.
The department had previously notified Biden of its intent to release the redacted files.
Recordings Became Central to Hur Investigation
The audio originated from interviews conducted inside Biden’s Delaware home while Zwonitzer assisted with Biden’s memoir, “Promise Me, Dad.”
Portions of those recordings later became key evidence in Hur’s classified documents investigation.
Hur ultimately declined to recommend criminal charges against Biden but ignited a political firestorm after describing him in a 2024 report as “an elderly man with a poor memory.”
Republicans seized on the report as evidence of cognitive decline and accused Biden’s Justice Department of shielding him from accountability.
Biden Claims Privacy Violations
Filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, Biden’s lawsuit argues that disclosure of the recordings would violate federal protections and constitute an “unwarranted invasion of privacy.”
Biden’s legal team contends that releasing the audio would improperly expose deeply personal conversations conducted inside his home, including discussions involving his late son Beau Biden.
The lawsuit also claims the House Judiciary Committee’s request serves merely as a “pretext” designed to circumvent federal disclosure protections.
House Republicans, including Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, argue access to the recordings is necessary to expose what they claim Democrats are attempting to hide.
Fight Reopens Bitter Political Battle
The dispute revives one of the most politically damaging controversies of Biden’s presidency.
Republicans had long demanded access to the audio recordings while former Attorney General Merrick Garland refused to release them, citing executive privilege concerns and fears surrounding manipulation or deepfake misuse.
The United States House of Representatives later voted to hold Garland in contempt of Congress over the standoff.
President Trump and his allies have repeatedly pointed to the Biden-Hur investigation as evidence of what they describe as a “two-tiered” justice system, contrasting Hur’s decision not to prosecute Biden with the federal classified documents prosecution Trump faced over materials stored at Mar-a-Lago.
The latest legal clash now threatens to reopen one of Biden’s most politically sensitive controversies as Trump continues reshaping the Justice Department and escalating attacks on what he calls the “deep state.”
