Brittany Mahomes, wife of three-time Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, sparked a social media frenzy this weekend after liking an Instagram post by former President Donald Trump. The post, which outlined the GOP's 2024 platform to “Make America Great Again,” touched on topics like tax cuts, border security and keeping men out of women's sports.
Mahomes quickly faced a wave of criticism from social media users, particularly on X. In response to the backlash, she defended her actions.
“I mean honestly,” she replied through Instagram. “To be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep-rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood.”
“There's no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well,” she added.
Nevertheless, the people living in their parents' basements continued to come out fighting.
“I knew Brittany Mahomes was a racist when she had to guess Pat's favorite food and she said chicken before Pat told her its Mexican food,” one wrote.
“Brittany Mahomes has always been unlikable… Why is anyone surprised she's a Trump supporter???” another spouted off.
The controversy ignited further when users questioned her stance, given her marriage to Patrick Mahomes, who has not publicly endorsed any political candidate. One user commented, “Patrick Mahomes, imagine marrying someone who doesn't care about your rights and your kid's rights.”
Conservative commentators, however, found humor in the situation, with some comparing the response to Mahomes' action to the acceptance of endorsements by other public figures. A popular account, Libs of TikTok, remarked, “Brittany Mahomes liked a Trump Instagram post and the Left lost their minds. Her response message is PERFECT.”
“Let me get this right. Steph Curry can endorse Kamala Harris live at the DNC but people are shaming Brittany Mahomes because she liked a Trump post?” someone else quipped.
On the final day of the Democratic National Convention, Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry showed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris in a video, while wearing the gold medal he won with Team USA at the Paris Olympics.
Curry's endorsement came after Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr's speech at the DNC on Monday.
Kerr, who also coached the U.S. men's basketball team at the Olympics, has faced criticism for past remarks about the United States and China.
In 2019, he was famously asked whether the NBA's business interests conflicted with China's human rights record.
“None of us are perfect and we all have different issues that we have to address,” he responded.
He also refused to give reporters a comment after then-Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey received backlash for a tweet supporting Hong Kong protesters.
Both of these incidents resurfaced on social media following his DNC speech, and Trump's campaign took the opportunity to criticize him.
