In a continuation of yesterday’s deadly incident, walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah have reportedly exploded across Lebanon today, including during a funeral for militants who were killed in the previous day’s explosions.
The devices, often used as backup communication tools by the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), have caused significantly larger explosions than those seen with yesterday’s explosive-laden pagers.
At least 11 people were killed and 2,700 injured in Tuesday’s incident.
Hezbollah leadership had switched to using pagers and flip phones in an attempt to avoid being hacked, but The New York Times is now reporting that Israel intercepted the pagers from Taiwan, tampered with them and triggered explosions in the devices carried by thousands of Hezbollah fighters.
According to the report, Israeli operatives placed two ounces of explosive material next to the batteries in the pagers, along with a remotely controlled switch to detonate the explosives.
At 3:30 p.m. Lebanon time, Hezbollah fighters reportedly received a message that appeared to come from their leadership, shortly before the devices simultaneously exploded.
The exact number of casualties from today’s wave of explosions is still unknown.
