An ex-FBI agent, Nicholas Anthony Williams, confessed on Monday to stealing silver bars and cash during a raid on Alexander Fan, a Jan. 6 defendant. Williams, who had worked in the FBI’s Houston office, admitted to four thefts in total, one of which occurred during the raid on Fan’s home on July 13, 2023.
Fan, a member of Asians for Trump who breached the Capitol in protest of the Electoral College certification, had $2,729 in cash and silver bars stolen by Williams. The former agent later attempted to sell the stolen bars.
As The Washington Times reports:
[Williams] began working as an FBI agent in the Houston office in 2019 and served on the criminal violent gang squad and the counterterrorism squad.
The theft from a Jan. 6 defendant is a black eye for the Justice Department, which has faced criticism from Republicans for what they see as an overzealous pursuit of participants in the demonstration.
Treatment of Jan. 6 defendants has been disproportionately harder than other major civil disturbances, such as the months of rioting at the federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon, in the summer of 2020.
Williams also admitted to thefts during other raids, pocketing $1,200 in December 2020, $4,145 in March 2022, and $1,574 in January 2023. His theft from Fan ultimately led to his downfall, according to court documents.
In addition, Williams acknowledged using his FBI-issued credit card to purchase three cell phones, which he later pawned for just $105, despite spending nearly $900 in taxpayer money. He lied to the FBI about these expenses, claiming they were legitimate case-related costs.
Alexander Fan, for his part in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, was sentenced to one year of probation earlier this year.
