There is an old trick in argument, and it works by choosing the finish line before the race is run. You define victory as something your opponent was never trying to do, you note that he did not do it, and you call his failure to do it your triumph. This is the move at the heart of “Iran’s New Grand Strategy,” the Foreign Affairs essay published on June 3 by Narges Bajoghli and Vali Nasr. The authors observe that the Islamic Republic did not collapse under U.S. and Israeli bombardment, that no.

Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) has significantly outpaced incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R) in fundraising, bringing in $30 million during the third quarter of 2024. The numbers show Allred raised $9 million more than Cruz’s campaign during the same period.

The substantial haul cements Allred’s position as one of the best-funded Democratic Senate candidates this cycle, with his campaign raising over $68.7 million to date. It draws increasing national attention to a race Republicans were initially more confident about, though Cruz still leads by 5 percentage points, according to the RealClearPolitics average.

In contrast, Cruz campaign reports approximately $16.2 million cash-on-hand. His campaign for a third term is focused on maintaining its competitive edge after narrowly securing victory in his 2018 reelection bid against Democrat Beto O’Rourke in what was then the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history.

Allred’s campaign manager, Paige Hutchinson, attributed the success to middle class enthusiasm, saying, “From the $5 grassroots donors to the families knocking on doors each weekend, this campaign is about bringing Texans together and holding Ted Cruz accountable for only caring about himself. This November, Colin Allred will send Trump’s Cruz packing for good.”

The Hill offers further insight into the state of the race:

According to Cruz’s campaign, he received 212,000 unique contributions with an average contribution of $38, including from 101,000 first-time donors.

“At the final stretch of the campaign, enthusiasm for Senator Cruz is tangible in every corner of the Lone Star State,” said Nick Maddux, a Cruz spokesperson. “Texans know what is at stake. The future of our State and Nation is on the line and supporters are geared up and ready to re-elect Senator Cruz and Keep Texas, Texas.”

“Senator Cruz will crisscross the State meeting and rallying with supporters to turn out the vote and ensure victory in November,” he added.

Cruz is considered a slight favorite to return to Washington, according to most political prognosticators. But the race is the toughest of any of the incumbent Senate Republicans, who have a favorable map this cycle.

With the election just 26 days away, both candidates are pushing hard to sway undecided voters and rally their bases in what is shaping up to be one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate races.
