As President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his second term in office, the extraordinary details of his 2024 election victory continue to surface, highlighting just how powerful his performance was—especially in regions and demographics where he was expected to lose support. From flipping all seven key swing states to making significant inroads with Black and Hispanic voters, Trump’s victory has left the Democratic Party grappling with its most significant defeat in decades.
One of the more controversial moments during the election cycle occurred when Trump repeated claims about Haitian migrants allegedly eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. While this comment drew widespread backlash, especially from the media and the left, it didn’t appear to hurt his standing in the area. In fact, Trump’s support in Clark County, home to Springfield, increased significantly, with Trump securing 64.2% of the vote, a 3.5-point swing from 2020.
The Daily Mail reports:
In his landslide victory, Trump stormed home to a 30-point lead over Kamala Harris in Clark County, home to around 130,000 people and the town of Springfield.
In a DailyMail.com poll conducted with J.L. Partners before the election, most voters considered Trump’s comments on migrants to be the biggest blunder of his campaign.
Out of 1,000 voters were asked about the Republican nominee’s biggest mistake, they pointed to the moment in the September debate where he said: ‘In Springfield, they are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats.
Harris started laughing in response and it sparked a furious response from the White House and Democrats calling it ‘dangerous rhetoric’.
The comments dominated the news cycle for weeks after the fact — especially on outlets known to lean to the left.
The media focused on how his rhetoric could harm migrants, and zeroed in on bomb threats (all of which were revealed to be fake), while ignoring the complaints of residents living side by side with thousands of unassimilated foreigners, creating an enormous burden on public resources like schools, law enforcement and hospitals, without casting a single vote in favor of this dramatic change.
The shift in Clark County was part of a broader trend in which Democrats lost thousands of voters across the nation, particularly in areas where Trump had strong economic messaging.
According to data analyzed by The Daily Mail, Trump’s appeal among traditionally blue-collar voters, including Hispanic and Black Americans, played a crucial role in these wins. The fact that Trump won all seven of these pivotal states sent shockwaves through the Democratic establishment, as it signaled not just a political win, but a seismic shift in voter behavior across the nation.
In a stunning turnaround, Trump gained support in 49 out of 50 states, including flipping several counties that had been reliably Democratic in past elections. For example, Georgia’s Jefferson County, where the median household income is far below the state average, saw a dramatic 8% shift from Democrat to Republican, with Trump winning a 1.4% majority. This trend was replicated in other counties across the nation, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas.
Even in wealthier districts like Nassau County, New York, traditionally a Democratic stronghold, Trump performed surprisingly well, converting a 9.5% win for Joe Biden in 2020 to a 4.9% victory in 2024. Despite Nassau being one of the wealthiest districts in the state, Trump’s message on taxes, business deregulation, and job creation appeared to attract voters concerned with their economic future.
