MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow is reportedly taking a substantial pay cut as her network grapples with declining viewership following President-elect Donald Trump’s comeback victory. According to a report from the Washington Free Beacon, Maddow, who has been one of the network’s highest-paid hosts, agreed to reduce her annual salary from $30 million to $25 million over the next three years. This pay reduction, which was first reported by The Ankler on Thursday, is seen as a reflection of broader challenges facing MSNBC, whose already thinning audience has shrunk significantly in the wake of Trump’s election win.
Maddow’s salary reduction comes amid a larger crisis for MSNBC, which has seen its viewership plummet by nearly 50% following Trump’s reelection. According to Breitbart News, the network’s ratings have been hit hard, with many of its core viewers seemingly disillusioned after Trump’s comeback victory, and potentially questioning the reliability of their reporting. The drop in viewership has sent shockwaves through MSNBC, with the network now facing the uncomfortable reality of losing relevance in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.
Even prior to the 2024 election, there was a palpable and undeniable shift in how Americans consume political news. The influence and prestige of traditional media giants like CNN, Fox News, and the New York Times are rapidly dwindling — especially among younger demographics. Instead, the political narrative is largely shaped by new media, including podcasters, YouTubers, TikTokers and independent/unaffiliated journalists.
This shift has been echoed in polling data, with Gallup’s October survey revealing a record-low level of trust in the mainstream media. The poll found that Americans’ confidence in the media’s ability to report news “fully, accurately, and fairly” had dropped significantly over the past year.
As MSNBC faces significant challenges, the pressure to adjust its programming and financial model will likely intensify. Maddow’s pay cut is just the beginning, and likely serves as a bellwether for the network’s future strategy. The broader trend of declining trust in traditional media outlets has placed many cable news networks in a precarious position, forcing them to reconsider their content strategies and the roles of their high-profile personalities.
For Maddow, the pay reduction might be seen as a necessary concession in response to the changing media landscape. As more Americans turn to non-traditional outlets for their news, the days of eight figure salaries for cable news anchors might be numbered, and networks will need to find new ways to adapt to the shifting dynamics of media consumption.
MSNBC’s challenges are not unique among their industry peers. CNN, another long-time major player in the legacy media landscape, has also faced significant financial strain in recent months, resulting in multiple rounds of layoffs and pay cuts. In the wake of its declining viewership and ratings, CNN implemented salary freezes and even cut compensation for some of its highest-profile anchors and staff. These measures were part of broader efforts to curb costs and stabilize the network’s finances amid a turbulent media environment. The layoffs and pay cuts at CNN follow a broader trend of restructuring and cost-cutting across the industry, driven by decreasing trust in the media, the rise of alternative media outlets, and the shifting preferences of news consumers. Similarly to MSNBC, CNN is grappling with how to remain competitive and financially viable in an era where traditional cable news is facing heightened scrutiny and competition from digital platforms. The tightening purse strings at both CNN and MSNBC underscores the growing pressures on legacy media networks to adapt to a rapidly changing media ecosystem.
Both MSNBC and CNN’s declining viewership could be partially attributed to a growing disconnect between their self-presentation as objective news outlets and the increasing perception of political bias in their reporting. For years, these networks have billed themselves as bastions of impartial journalism, but many viewers have felt that their coverage leans left, and became particularly untethered from reality in the wake of the first Trump presidency and beyond. While CNN has made efforts in recent months to address accusations of bias—by shifting some of its programming and bringing in more conservative voices in an attempt to balance its content—these moves may have come too late to regain trust among disaffected viewers. The network’s attempts to reclaim credibility with a broader audience have struggled to overcome years of perceived partisanship, leaving many viewers skeptical. Similarly, MSNBC’s overtly liberal commentary, especially during prime-time segments hosted by personalities like Rachel Maddow, has alienated a significant portion of the potential audience that expects impartial reporting. In a media landscape increasingly dominated by opinion-driven shows, these networks are now facing the challenge of finding a sustainable balance between commentary and factual reporting—one that could help stem their viewership decline.

It’s a shame that you radicals forced us to hire a hard talking, ground walking, coward stalking man like Donald Trump.
I grew up around old school Union construction and put in 36 years as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

Eff the I.U.O.E and Local 14.
The Body has spoken.
It’s time.
I’m surprised she rec’d that much in pay. Actually, shocked. It’s a failing “news” show in which she purports to provide accurate, relevant, and useful information. It’s actually a mass of lies and distortion, like nearly all news programs. But her ratings are among the lowest, you’d think they could find someone else who would accept significantly less.
The poor baby. I guess she’ll have to start shopping at Walmart like the rest of us. The few times I’ve watched her (never on purpose), I thought shed’ be more at home on Comedy Central. . . . .
Maddow is the most successful of all the MSNBC hosts and earns every cent. If she disappears from the channel, I’ll follow her to wherever she ends up.
It is a start. $25 million more to go in cuts, and pay will equal worth.
