A Chinese national was recently arrested for allegedly using a drone to photograph a sensitive U.S. military site, sparking fresh concerns about espionage and mysterious drone activity across the nation.
According to the U.S. Attorney General’s Office, personnel at Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County detected a drone overhead on Nov. 30. The high-tech detection system revealed the drone’s flight path, which included an hour-long loop over the base, hovering about a mile high. Authorities tracked the device back to Ocean Park, a nearby public space, where security teams confronted 39-year-old Yinpiao Zhou of Brentwood, California. Zhou allegedly had the drone concealed inside his jacket.
Officials confirmed that the drone matched the one observed over the base. A subsequent search revealed aerial images of the military installation, raising alarm bells about potential espionage. Investigators also discovered that Zhou had searched online for “Vandenberg Space Force Base Drone Rules” and discussed hacking methods to override the drone’s flight restrictions.
Zhou, a Chinese citizen with permanent U.S. residency, now faces charges for violating national defense airspace and failing to register the drone as an aircraft. If convicted, he could face up to four years in federal prison. He was intercepted at San Francisco Airport on Monday while attempting to board a flight to China.
“This defendant allegedly flew a drone over a military base and took photos of the base’s layout, which is against the law,” said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada. “The security of our nation is of paramount importance, and my office will continue to promote the safety of our nation’s military personnel and facilities.”
Unidentified Drones Fuel Alarm on the East Coast
Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, mysterious drone sightings have left communities uneasy and officials scrambling for answers. For weeks, large, possibly car-sized, drones have been spotted flying in coordinated groups at night, often near sensitive military installations.

The drones are reportedly 8-10 feet wide and can’t be detected because they don’t give off heat.

Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck, New Jersey, has confirmed multiple airspace breaches by unidentified drones. Public affairs officer Bill Addison noted that while no explicit threats have been identified, the incursions have, yet again, raised more questions than answers.
The first large-scale drone sightings in New Jersey were reported in mid-November. Their proximity to the Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster—President-elect Trump’s “Summer White House”—and Picatinny Arsenal, an Army research and munitions facility, has raised substantial concern.
Speculation has ranged from foreign reconnaissance to experimental test flights conducted by the U.S. military. In a nationally televised interview, New Jersey Representative Jeff Van Drew (R) claimed the drones are part of an Iranian operation. Speaking to Fox News, Van Drew alleged, “Iran launched a mothership probably about a month ago that contains these drones. That mothership is off the East Coast of the United States of America.” The representative outright dismissed theories that the drones could belong to the U.S. government.

The Pentagon, however, has rejected any links to a foreign entity or adversary. “These are not U.S. military drones,” stated a Department of Defense spokesperson. “At this time, we have no evidence that these activities are coming from a foreign entity or the work of an adversary.”

Former Maryland Governor Shares Drone Encounter
Adding to the intrigue, former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) recently shared his own unsettling experience with mysterious drones. Hogan reported witnessing dozens of massive drones flying over his home in Davidsonville, Maryland, just 25 miles from Washington, D.C.
“Last night, beginning at around 9:45 pm, I personally witnessed (and videoed) what appeared to be dozens of large drones in the sky above my residence,” Hogan wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. He added that the activity persisted for about 45 minutes.
Hogan expressed frustration at the lack of official answers. “We are being told that neither the White House, the military, the FBI, or Homeland Security have any idea what they are, where they came from, or who has launched or is controlling them–and that they pose no threat. That response is entirely unacceptable.”
The moderate Republican called for urgent action, echoing growing bipartisan calls for transparency and decisive federal intervention. “The American people deserve answers and action now,” he stated.
Drone Security: A Growing National Concern
From California to New Jersey, the proliferation of drone activity near sensitive sites underscores the growing challenge of maintaining airspace security in the modern era. Whether linked to foreign espionage, experimental military technology or something more mysterious, a growing coalition of Americans is calling for a coordinated response to safeguard national security and address public concerns.
