Will There Be An Insurrection Against Trump?

Resistance. Is insurrection and civil conflict still in the cards for a Trump America? Or is the anti-Trump resistance exhausted? We are all very familiar with the Democrat narrative echoed by a complicit legacy media about the threat of right-wing insurrection.

The Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot supposedly crystalized that ominous threat. And the Democrats and their media allies haven’t stopped beating that drum ever since.

As I’ve argued many times before, that riot and the alleged right-wing insurrection threat, are greatly overblown. Meanwhile, what is totally missing from that narrative  is the threat of left-wing insurrection, subversion and sabotage—all under the banner of “resistance.”

And there is no reason to imagine it, we already witnessed it fully during Donald Trump’s first term and beyond. It has ranged from overt obstruction, delegitimizing Trump, internally sabotaging and subverting him via the Deep State, as well as impeaching him twice along mostly partisan lines, and prosecuting him criminally on “trumped up” charges (pun intended).

There was also the massive wave of left-wing riots, often disguised as Black Lives Matter (BLM) or other left-wing causes, but almost all directed at Trump. Often violently.

And let’s not forget about the dangerous and inflammatory anti-MAGA rhetoric and two assassination attempts against Trump, one which missed killing the ex-president by a fraction of an inch.

However, many now argue that after Trump’s decisive 2024 victory, the Democrat resistance is “exhausted” and has petered out. And expect Trump to come in guns blazing on day one of his term, far more organized and effective than in 2017.

National Review (NR) notes: “a testament to how muted the anti-Trump resistance has become is that one of the biggest acts of defiance to date is congressional Democrats’ reported plans to boycott his inauguration.

“More than a dozen” plan to stay away, reports Axios That comes to about 2.4 percent of Congress, and a far cry from the number who boycotted in 2017.

NR continues:

Though the president-elect’s candidacy was opposed in apocalyptic terms, ambivalence appears to characterize the resist-Trump movement now that he has won — a far cry from the reaction in 2017, when the Women’s March mobilization turned out hundreds of thousands in Washington and millions worldwide, and the administration faced a historic onslaught of multi-state lawsuits. It’s still early, and Trump’s looming inauguration could yet spark a new wave of demonstrations (at least one such protest is planned). A late-January burst of executive orders and decrees that test the bounds of presidential power could jolt Democrats into action. But, as Jim Geraghty already observed, something about the resistance seems — well, “exhausted.”

And this reaction is very understandable. As Geraghty wrote:

Trump won the second-highest number of votes for president ever cast, no one’s questioning the legitimacy of his victory, Democrats in the Senate are signing off on some of his cabinet picks, and he starts his second term with at least an initially high approval rating. Trump may not be normal, but he’s starting to look normalized.

But we should not become too complacent. There will be resistance, even if slightly muted. And depending on circumstances it could grow or fizzle out.

National Review continues:

The resistance appears to be gearing up for at least subdued defiance in 2025, even if it’s driven in part by 2028 presidential aspirations. The Economist predicts the state-level pushback will play out in three parts: “litigation, legislation and state-centred foreign policies.” (Forgive the British spelling.) Litigation may be the most visible, as blue-state governors and attorneys general battle Trump anew on immigration, environmental rules, and more. Governor Gavin Newsom, one of the 2028 prospects, is already leading the charge after calling a special session to Trump-proof California, requesting $25 million for a state litigation fund “to defend California from unconstitutional federal overreach, challenge illegal federal actions in court, and take administrative actions to reduce potential harm.”

At the local level, Boston recently voted to retain its “sanctuary” status, signaling it will keep its relationship with ICE frosty in a Trump second term, as Haley Strack reports. The president of Wesleyan University, for what it’s worth, has pledged a similar policy of non-cooperation on immigration.

However, some prominent Democrats, like Mayor Adams of New York City, are saying they will work with Trump to deport criminal aliens.

Still, while illegal immigration and Trump’s mass deportation plans will likely spark the most Democrat resistance, expect emotional reaction from the radical transgender community. Meanwhile, the anti-Trump resistance is already being seen in other less obvious ways.

It is now spreading to the federal courts, where three judges have rescinded their retirements to block President Trump from picking their replacements. Republicans said the act of political defiance was unprecedented for a sitting appeals court judge.

The partisanship is standard fare for Capitol Hill or the White House, but it was shocking to see it on such raw display now in the federal judiciary.

While some state and local Democrats will fight Trump tooth and nail on deportations, or trans issues, expect the left to engage in other more subtle resistance. Whether that grows into anything more serious is still to be seen.
