The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – As the world became more dangerous in 2024, the use of its most dangerous weapons has become more likely in 2025 and beyond.

In 2024, Vladimir Putin announced that Russian nuclear forces were on full combat alert and soon followed with military exercises to test the readiness of Russia’s non-strategic nuclear forces.

He also launched Russia’s new hypersonic ballistic missile against targets in Ukraine and announced a revised Russian nuclear doctrine that lowers the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons to meet a conventional threat to Russian territory.

Meanwhile, North Korea’s announcement that it would no longer seek reunification and reconciliation with South Korea, have reopened debates in both South Korea and Japan on whether to remain non-nuclear states.

In the Middle East, Iran may become a nuclear weapons state in response to Israel’s devastating attacks on it and its proxies. This has unleashed speculation as to whether Israel will launch a preemptive attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Then there’s China’s rapid expansion of its nuclear force in 2024. China is building a stronger nuclear force to deter U.S. intervention, check a potential nuclear first strike, and will allow for increased control over escalation during a conflict in a way its previously smaller and less diverse nuclear force couldn’t.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense stories ending the week from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEFING – the PDB:

NATIONAL SECURITY

Trump’s words on retaking the Panama Canal, buying or annexing Greenland and even absorbing Canada ring alarms in Europe, but officials have a measured response.

I’M WITH THE 2 DISSENTING AGENCIES – Majority of US intelligence has found no evidence linking a foreign power to the mysterious “Havana syndrome” injuries reported by some US diplomats and other government personnel, BUT two agencies now say it’s possible a foreign adversary may have deployed a weapon responsible for the injuries.

HOMELAND SECURITY

URGENT NEED – Strengthening homeland defense through integrated civil-military air surveillance. The U.S. again finds itself unable to reliably detect and identify threats from the air. Note the 2023 Chinese spy balloon incident, the unattributed aerial incursions over Langley Air Force Base and other US military installations at home and overseas, and recent reports of mysterious drone activity over several U.S. states.

The fiery New Year’s Day suicide of an Army Green Beret exposed the Pentagon’s struggle to identify and treat brain injuries and mental health issues.

More than 600 California National Guard troops activated and 8 aircraft heading to assist with the fires devastating the Los Angeles area.

One of just two CL-415 Super Scooper amphibious planes capable of repeatedly scooping 1,600 gallons of water from the ocean was temporarily taken out of Palisades fire fight by collision with drone.

Humvees, other equipment stolen from Army Reserve center amid California wildfires.

POLITICS

Judge sentences Donald Trump in nonsensical business records( aka ‘hush money’) case to NO punishment. The outcome frees him to return to the White House unencumbered by the threat of a jail term or a fine. But Trump will still appeal the trumped-up conviction, and likely win.

Senate leaders have scheduled a blitz of 15 confirmation hearings this week including DOD and VA secretaries, in an effort to get key members of Trump’s incoming administration in place as soon as possible.

Trump tapped former Nevada Senate candidate Sam Brown to serve as the head of cemetery and memorial affairs for the VA, putting a combat-wounded veteran in charge of the key post.

US POWER OVERSEAS

Panama Canal administrator pushes back against Trump’s assertions of Chinese meddling, rejecting Trump claims that the US should retake it.

IRAN THREAT/ISRAEL WARS

Israel’s defense industry greatly spurred by foreign demand for its aerial-defense systems and significant government spending aimed at funding Israel’s ongoing military campaigns.

CHINA THREAT

Pentagon ‘concerned China will instigate’ avoidable conflict. The U.S. is not trying to goad China into a military conflict, the Pentagon’s no. 2 said, referring to China’s Xi Jinping’s remark last summer that he thinks the U.S. is trying to bait him into invading Taiwan so the U.S. can step in.

Outgoing Deputy Defense Secretary Hicks touts work to thwart China’s A2/AD strategy. the Pentagon’s No. 2 touted her team’s work to quickly disperse U.S. military’s capabilities to better challenge China.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Zelenskyy offers to release captured North Korean soldiers in exchange for Ukrainian soldiers held in Russia.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

North Korean troops in Russia gain battlefield experience, cementing alliance with Russia. This, after Ukraine launched a lightning-fast incursion and seized territory in Russia’s Kursk region over the summer.

South Korea’s acting leader on Friday accepted the resignation of the chief of the presidential security service as he faced police questioning over how his forces blocked police efforts to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol last week.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

White House announces new Venezuela sanctions as Maduro enters third term following an fraudulent election he didn’t win.

NATO to boost Baltic presence, send 10 warships to guard undersea cables against possible sabotage.

Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni has said Italy may employ Elon Musk’s Starlink service to provide encrypted satellite communications to link its military contingents around the world because there is “no public alternative.”

US MILITARY

More F-15Es to get advanced electronic-warfare system.

US Army wants is looking for unmanned aircraft systems (spy drones) to launch from medium- or high-altitude platforms that would perform tasks like intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

Early momentum: Army hits 30,000 recruits, half its goal for the year of recruiting 61,000 active-duty soldiers.
