The Trump administration has identified the source of the mysterious drones spotted across the Northeastern United States, including sightings near Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey and the home of former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Tuesday that the drones, which puzzled Americans for months, were of domestic origin and had clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate. Reading a statement from President Donald Trump, Leavitt clarified that the flights were authorized for research and other purposes.
“This was not the enemy,” Leavitt emphasized, adding that private drone enthusiasts and growing public curiosity only deepened the mystery.

The revelation sparked backlash among some conservative commentators on the social media platform X, who questioned why the outgoing Biden administration failed to address the situation promptly. Critics argued that the lack of clarity from federal authorities created unnecessary panic at the time.
Trump’s Efforts to Address the Drone Mystery
The issue first gained national attention in mid-November, with federal authorities urging calm while withholding details. When asked during an executive order signing ceremony on Inauguration Day if Americans should be concerned about the drones, President Trump promised action.
“I would like to find out what it is and tell the people,” Trump said, directing his Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to investigate immediately.
Trump first addressed the controversy during a Republican governors’ meeting at Mar-a-Lago after his reelection, stating, “I’m going to give you a report on drones about one day into the administration because I think it’s ridiculous that they’re not telling you about what’s going on with the drones.”

Radioactive Material Incident Heightened Concerns
Adding to the confusion, an incident involving missing radioactive material licensed to a New Jersey cancer treatment center sparked alarm. Belleville Mayor Michael Melham revealed in a live TV interview that a shipment processed through the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal had gone missing in transit. The container arrived at its destination without the Ge-68 pin sources needed to calibrate PET scanners for medical imaging.
“We’re aware of a threat that came in through Port Newark,” Melham said on Good Day New York. He speculated that the drones’ grid-like flight patterns could be connected to the search for the missing material. “What might they be looking for? Maybe that’s radioactive material.”
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) later confirmed the incident, issuing an alert that heightened public anxiety. The timing of the radioactive material loss coinciding with the drone sightings added fuel to the speculation.
Closing the Mystery
While the Trump administration ultimately clarified the situation, the delayed communication led to widespread speculation and distrust. Leavitt’s statement aimed to reassure the public that the drones posed no security threat and were primarily recreational or research-related.
Critics of the Biden administration continue to argue that a more proactive response could have mitigated public fears. For Trump, the incident became yet another example of his administration’s promise to deliver transparency to the American people.
