Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has raised concerns over potential political interference from the Department of Justice (DOJ) following repeated suggestions that she could be under investigation for her involvement in a “Know Your Rights” webinar to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation.
In a letter sent Thursday to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Ocasio-Cortez requested clarity on whether the DOJ had initiated any investigation into her actions after Border Czar Tom Homan accused her of obstructing the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts. The meeting was designed to help individuals craft responses in the event of an encounter federal immigration enforcement, including raids.
Tom Homan publicly criticized Ocasio-Cortez for hosting the webinar, arguing that it violated federal law by actively helping illegal immigrants avoid deportation. He also called on the DOJ to review whether Ocasio-Cortez’s actions could be classified as impeding federal law enforcement efforts. Homan’s public statements, made in multiple interviews, led to him requesting that the Deputy Attorney General launch an official investigation into the congresswoman’s actions, with Homan suggesting that she could face legal consequences. She has also supported various activist groups working to disrupt immigration raids in major cities like Los Angeles.
In her letter, Ocasio-Cortez argued that the webinar was an exercise of her First Amendment rights, stating that the materials and information shared were intended solely to inform her constituents in the Bronx and Queens about their legal rights in the face of immigration raids, though readers that note that constituents are voters and illegal immigrants are prohibited from participating in federal elections. She also insisted that Homan’s comments and the push for a potential investigation amounted to a politically motivated threat against her right to free speech. Ocasio-Cortez has called on Attorney General Bondi to respond to her inquiry by March 5.
“My concern is that the DOJ has allowed itself to become a political tool for individuals and organizations that disagree with elected officials’ stance on issues,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “I am requesting clarification on whether the department has yielded to political pressure and whether it will be weaponized to target officials simply for expressing their views.”
There is a certain irony in Ocasio-Cortez’s claims of the DOJ being weaponized against her, especially when considering the actions of the Biden administration’s DOJ against President Donald Trump. Biden’s DOJ has been heavily criticized for what are perceived as politically motivated investigations into Trump, particularly concerning his handling of classified documents and January 6th. These actions have raised questions about the fairness and impartiality of the DOJ. While Ocasio-Cortez had no complaints about the weaponization of the DOJ when her political adversaries were the targets, she has now become deeply passionate about the issue.
“Helping immigrants understand their rights in America is not obstruction, it’s education,” Ocasio-Cortez persisted. “My job as an elected official is to ensure that my constituents, including those who are undocumented, are equipped with the information they need to navigate a complex and often hostile legal system.”
Again, a constituency is defined as “a a body of voters in a specified area who elect a representative to a legislative body,” and any illegal immigrants that voted for the congresswoman has committed a felony. Despite her framing of the issue, many critics remained unmoved, asserting that her actions aided and abetted the continued violation of federal law.
The debate over Ocasio-Cortez’s webinar highlights a growing divide between Democratic lawmakers and the Trump administration over the issue of immigration enforcement. While many Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, have opposed the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies, polls show that a significant portion of the American public supports stronger immigration enforcement, including the deportation of those illegally residing in the United States.
In recent months, President Trump has promised to carry out what he calls the largest deportation operation in U.S. history, pledging to remove millions of illegal immigrants from the country. This has led to tension between the federal government and sanctuary cities like New York, where local authorities often refuse to cooperate with ICE.
