In a fiery debate on The View, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith dismantled co-host Joy Behar’s assertion that President Donald Trump did not win a “mandate” in the 2024 election. The exchange was a sharp contrast of perspectives as Behar criticized Trump’s narrow popular vote victory, while Smith passionately argued that Trump’s win represented a clear and legitimate mandate.
Behar, a staunch critic of Trump, suggested that the president’s victory was far from a mandate, pointing out that he narrowly won the popular vote by just over 1%. She also referenced the Republican Party’s slim majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate as further evidence that Trump’s success was anything but overwhelming. “What kind of mandate is this really?” Behar asked, prompting Smith to agree with her.

"He won every swing state. He increased in terms of his voter turnout in his favor from the standpoint of Blacks, Latinos and young voters. 89% of the counties shifted to the right. That’s a mandate!" pic.twitter.com/hdzuGucCuo
Smith, known for his bold commentary on sports but also for his willingness to speak on political matters, was quick to rebut Behar’s claim. He argued that, despite the relatively slim popular vote margin, Trump’s victory should indeed be considered a mandate. According to Smith, Trump’s success was rooted in his ability to win all seven swing states, increase voter turnout in key demographic groups, and become the first Republican in 20 years to win the popular vote.
The First Take host made it clear that he was not a Trump supporter but rather a proponent of truth and facts. He pointed to Trump’s substantial inroads with racial minorities and young voters, as well as his ability to win swing states that had been critical to previous Democratic victories.
Smith also suggested that Trump’s success was not merely a result of his own political strategy but also a response to growing frustration with the Democratic Party. “Trump’s victory is a result of Americans voting against the Democrats’ agenda,” Smith argued. He claimed that the Democratic Party needed to reassess its messaging if it hoped to overcome Trump in future elections.
Public polling data backed up Smith’s claims, with significant numbers of voters favoring Trump over both former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on issues such as the economy and immigration—two of the leading concerns during the 2024 election. Smith also noted that Trump’s strong performance among Black, Latino, and blue-collar workers was largely tied to his economic policies and stance on immigration, which resonated with these groups.
One of Trump’s most notable achievements in the 2024 election was his victory with Hispanic voters. For the first time in history, Trump became the first Republican nominee to win the support of Hispanic men in a presidential race, earning 55% of their vote in an NBC News exit poll.
An example of this included a historic win in Starr County, Texas, a historically Democratic stronghold. With over 57% of the vote, Trump became the first Republican to win Starr County since 1892. This border county, with a 97% Hispanic population, had long been a reliable Democratic bastion, but Trump’s policies on immigration and the economy helped him secure a decisive victory in the region.
Smith’s defense of Trump’s mandate was met with resistance from Behar, but seemed to resonate with viewers. He stressed the importance of recognizing the political shifts that took place during the election and how Trump’s appeal to various voter groups and swing states made him a formidable political force — especially considering the 89% of counties that moved rightward.
He continued, “The problem is if you’re the Democratic Party and you lost 49.8% to 48.3% and you’re looking at that 1.5% difference, that’s an excuse for you to say ‘what we did really wasn’t that bad. We should continue to do that.’ No, don’t continue to do that. Find a new strategy.”

Great work as always
GOD BLESS TRUTH. IF TRUMP DIDN’T WIN, WHO DID? ARE YOU ASKING FOR A RECOUNT THAT WOULD REVEAL MORE DEMS WON. SOUNDS PATHETIC TO ME
Joy Behar and her liberal co-hosts are really a pain. Sometimes it would be nice to have her and her other co-hosts mouths taped shut because they never say anything wothwhile. That show NEEDS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE AIRWAVES.
