Former U.S. Senator Jon Tester, a Democrat from Montana, has attributed his loss in the 2024 Senate race to Vice President Kamala Harris’ poor performance in the state and the Democratic Party’s embrace of what Tester described as “woke politics.” Tester, who lost to Republican Tim Sheehy, stated on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher that the top of the ticket, namely Harris and the broader Democratic Party’s leftward shift, was a major factor in his defeat.
“That top of the ticket did not perform,” Tester said during the interview. “I don’t think the top of the ticket embraced the issues that Americans were talking about. We got wrapped up in all the cancel culture crap.”
Tester, who served three terms as Montana’s U.S. Senator, frequently broke with the Biden-Harris administration on several key policies. His decision to withhold endorsement for Harris after she became the Democratic nominee was also seen as a reflection of his skepticism towards the progressive shift within his party.
Tester’s remarks on Real Time emphasized the disconnect he felt between the progressive agenda pushed by the national Democratic Party and the concerns of voters in his home state. Montana has long been a red state, with Republican candidates consistently winning presidential elections there. In 2024, Donald Trump carried Montana by a decisive 20 points, winning 58% of the vote.
Despite his moderate approach, Tester lost his Senate seat to Sheehy, who won by a margin of seven points (52% to 45%). Tester insisted that the poor performance of the Democratic ticket in Montana had a direct impact on his race. While he didn’t name Harris outright, he made it clear that her progressive stances and her own loss in the state had a negative impact on his own chances.
“If you want to know the truth, the top of the ticket lost by what? 30-some points? And the truth is the top of the ticket has to at least be competitive if you’re gonna win in a red state or even a purple state,” Tester explained.
The former senator also discussed his belief that the Democratic Party needs to “court the center” to rebuild and provide a viable alternative to the Republican Party. Both Tester and host Bill Maher agreed that the party’s current far-left leaning policies were alienating moderate voters, especially in swing states.
Tester argued that Democrats should focus on common-sense issues that matter to everyday voters. “Yeah, you go to the place where the people are, and that way those disenfranchised Republicans have a place to land because they don’t think the other party’s crazy,” he said. “And if they’re able to do that, and you do that by talking about common sense stuff that people deal with every day.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin, a fellow panelist on the show, supported Tester’s criticism of the party, pointing out that cancel culture and “identity politics” had hurt Democrats in states like Montana. She echoed Tester’s sentiment that these issues distracted from more pressing concerns of voters and contributed to the party’s poor performance in the last election.

Who put that lunatic IN that position? No one elected or even got the opportunity to VOTE FOR HER to run for POTUS. It was the Democrats. like this clown, that put her there. Now he’s blaming HER??? So typical of the left. Claim everything that works, and BLAME everything that doesn’t on Others.
Perhaps he should reconsider the party he’s attached to.
The blame game is getting really old. Tester lost because he is a loser and the people of Montana finally caught him in his grift.
Just come out and say it!! The Democrat Party STINKS.
