Why? Are the cartels preparing for war? In a piece of news many may have missed, in late March, two Mexican nationals in Colorado were found with 180,000 illegal rounds of high caliber rifle and machine gun ammunition in the back of their white GMC van during a routine traffic stop.
U.S. officers counted 180 boxes stacked in the back of the van — each 1,000 rounds.
One hundred fifty of the boxes contained .308 caliber (essentially 7.62x51mm) ammo, a common hunting round, but also usable for automatic machine guns, including U.S. Squad Automatic Weapons (SAWs) and devastating multi-barrel rotary miniguns.
The other 30 boxes had what was simply called 7.62mm (which are likely 7.62x39mm), usually reserved for SKS and AK style combat rifles.
The big questions few in the media have asked is, who sent them, why were they here, how did they make the purchase without raising red flags and what was the huge load of ammo for?
When first hearing the news, many assumed that a couple of illegals were simply caught with a few boxes of ammo, and even those who understood the size of the ammo load assumed they may have been transporting it back to Mexico to arm the cartels there, which is bad enough.
Those brutal cartel wars not only chaos just south of us, but they also easily spill over onto U.S. soil.
However, some believe there is a far more sinister possibility.
A great podcaster I follow, Mike Glover, a very smart, well-spoken former Army Special Forces sergeant, argues that this could be a case of the cartels stockpiling these large amounts of ammo to link together for belt fed machine guns to be used in one or more coordinated attacks inside the U.S.
Even if only speculative, this could mean charging the two with facilitation terrorism, since most major Mexican drug cartels are now designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).
More on that in a bit, but first some more details on what we know for certain so far.
While initial arrest and discovery occurred in March, news outlets didn’t report on it until about a week ago. And this is about all they reported.
Caesar Ramon Martinez Solis, 41, and Humberto Ivan Amador Gavira, 24, two brothers-in-law from Durango, Mexico, were in the U.S. on nonimmigrant (B2 tourist) visas and told officers they were traveling from Mexico to Denver, then from Utah to Pueblo, Colorado, in a used cargo van they had recently bought.
(*My note, not included in any of these news stories — Pueblo is a noted U.S. den of cartel activity).
Neither spoke English well, nor could they provide the name of the gun and ammo store in Salt Lake City that they purchased the 180 boxes of ammo from or the address where they were taking the ammo to in Pueblo. The information was said to be on the phones they had that are now in the possession of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
(*My note — more likely though, they picked up the ammo from someone, probably a U.S. citizen or legal resident, who had been stocking up the ammo for them, or a compromised firearms dealer).
Solis, the driver, “further explained that he did not know the intent with the ammunition.”
The two men were arrested and charged with multiple violations, including unlawful possession of ammunition by aliens admitted under a nonimmigrant visa. The feds added that the driver was also charged with transporting hazardous materials without a permit, and several traffic infractions.
Both were transported to a local ICE detention facility.
Finally, at the end of almost every news story was the paragraph below, or something very similar:
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
However, as Glover notes, these two clowns appear to have been discovered by accident, and dumb luck, due to good local policing, and not by any federal task force.
More importantly, they were clearly sent to the US for their mission. Glover then speculates on motives and agendas.
He begins by reminding us of the number of strategic U.S. military sites in the Colorado region where these two Mexican nationals were arrested and where they headed.
Pueblo is only a few minutes from Ft Carson, Colorado, home of numerous units, including the 10th Special Forces Group, and an hour from an NSA facility. Then there is the NORAD and NORTHCOM HQ also in Colorado.
Buckley Space Base, our premiere facility for missile warning and tracking, is also located in Aurora, Colorado.
Then there is the fact that Canon city where these two Mexicans were arrested is 30 minutes from the federal supermax prison in Florence where El Chapo, the once leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, is imprisoned with a life sentence plus 30 years. Could they be preparing a jailbreak for the boss?
In his follow up podcast, Glover came up with four possible courses of action for the cartels.
One is an inside attack, the worst-case scenario. The ammo is being stockpiled for a major cartel terror attack since President Trump has pushed their backs against the wall.
Two is that they are going to resupply and distribute the ammo to cartel members throughout the U.S. for regular or other cartel activities.
Three is that they were consolidating the ammo before transporting it to Mexico. Since Mexican border agents don’t care or are in the pay of the cartels, that is easier than we might think.
Four is the option above, to break El Chapo from U.S. prison.
All are bad. Whatever the ultimate goal is, the danger is real. The cartels clearly have the money, means and motive to wreak maximum damage on American targets. This incident is just the tip of the iceberg.

I’ve been asking this question over and over again ever since Biden opened the Border,
Where and When are they going to Arm up? I’m hoping Noam will find out and stop it from happening! 🙏🙏
Although it should still be a worry, SAW’s use 5.56mm not 7.62. Cartels are an enemy let in by the last administration and IT IS AN INVASION! Also might want to find all of the ammunition and weapons bought by cabinet level organizations from 2008-2016 and from 2020 to 2024. Where did all of these weapons and ammo go? Does it take a conflict on our streets by these cartels to start deporting those that were surely here to man that conflict?

Pueblo? Doesn’t surprise me. I lived in Colorado Springs for 30 years. I moved to MO a few months ago. Starting in the Obama era, CO Dems and liberals have done everything they can to make CO a sanctuary state for illegals. If any CO law enforcement had stopped them, the moment it was determined they were illegals, they would have just been sent on their way.
