The U.S. Border Patrol has experienced an unprecedented surge in recruitment under the leadership of President Donald Trump, marking a stark contrast to the morale challenges faced during the previous administration. Between January and April 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) received 34,650 applications for Border Patrol positions, a remarkable 44% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This historic spike in applicants highlights the growing national interest in joining the agency and signals renewed confidence in the Trump administration’s approach to border security.
In January 2025, the month President Trump was sworn into office, the Border Patrol received the highest number of applications ever recorded since the agency’s founding in 1924. Chief Banks attributed the dramatic increase to the heightened sense of purpose and pride Americans feel in protecting the homeland.
“This historic spike in applicants is a direct reflection of the renewed national commitment to border security under the leadership of President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection,” a CBP statement read.
During the height of the Biden era border crisis, Border Patrol agents faced an increasing number of resignations, retirements, and tragic suicides. In 2022, a record 17 Border Patrol agents took their own lives, reflecting the strain the agency was under as it struggled to cope with an unprecedented influx of migrants and restrictive policy directives.
Chris Cabrera, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, testified before Congress in 2023, detailing the emotional toll the job took on agents, particularly when dealing with human trafficking and unaccompanied minors. The sense of frustration was compounded by what many agents saw as a failure to enforce national security laws effectively.
Under the Biden administration, agents were often pulled from their core mission of border patrol and directed to release migrants into the U.S. interior, rather than processing them for removal under the previous “catch and release” policy. This had become a major point of contention within the agency.
The uptick in Border Patrol applicants can also be attributed to targeted recruitment efforts under the Trump administration. CBP ramped up its outreach programs, including offering hiring incentives and specifically recruiting from the pool of veterans and former law enforcement professionals. Many of these candidates already possess valuable, mission-ready experience, making them an ideal fit for the Border Patrol.
Under President Trump’s leadership, the Border Patrol has made significant strides in responding to the growing security concerns at the border, including ramping up efforts to combat human trafficking and criminal smuggling networks.
In addition to increased recruitment, the administration has focused on increasing technological resources, including the expansion of border wall construction and improved surveillance technologies.

Controlling crime depends upon just laws that hold the guilty accountable, a capable enforcement team, and an impartial justice system. At this point in time I have
concerns regarding the impartiality of our justice system. Currently no one is above the law except political democrats and their underlings.
