CNN is facing backlash after dismissing President Donald Trump’s claims about falling grocery prices — just weeks before official data confirmed the sharpest drop in household food costs in nearly five years.
According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) released on Tuesday, food-at-home prices declined by 0.4% in April, marking the steepest one-month drop since September 2020. Egg prices led the plunge, falling a staggering 12.7%, the largest one-month decrease since 1984.
Ironically, the CPI data landed the same day CNN Business acknowledged that Trump’s previous statements about lower egg prices were “true now,” after weeks of previously insisting they were false.
CNN’s Daniel Dale had published a pointed “fact-check” on April 23, rejecting Trump’s comments made earlier that week about grocery prices falling.
“Trump claimed last Thursday and Friday that grocery prices ‘are down’ and then claimed Tuesday that they have ‘come down.’ False again,” Dale wrote at the time, citing data from March — before the April CPI figures were available.
Needless to say, that call didn’t age well.
In light of Tuesday’s updated CPI release, CNN walked back its earlier stance slightly. David Goldman, executive editor of CNN Business, conceded in a follow-up article that while Trump’s numbers were “exaggerated,” the overall trend he cited was correct.
“So Trump’s claim that consumer egg prices are down is finally true — even if the timing of his claim and the wild percentages he threw around were grossly inaccurate,” Goldman wrote, calling the April decline a “remarkable reversal.”
The Trump administration was quick to capitalize on the reversal, highlighting potential bias in legacy media coverage of the president’s policies and accomplishments.
“Legacy media outlets were quick to blame President Trump for egg prices amid the bird flu outbreak, but refused to cover how his policies dramatically dropped prices,” said Anna Kelly, deputy White House press secretary, in a statement to The Daily Caller News Foundation.
“The truth hurts: while the legacy media tried everything to keep him out of office, President Trump won, his policies are working, and families across the country are benefitting from lower costs.”
While CNN criticized Trump’s timing, wholesale market data from March and early April already showed a steady decline in egg prices, especially after stabilization in poultry supply chains following the avian flu crisis.
Private pricing trackers and USDA reports had documented falling costs across meat, dairy, and produce categories, with analysts predicting the consumer market would soon follow. The April CPI confirmed this trend.
CNN’s own Tuesday coverage acknowledged that wholesale egg prices had already been halved, making a sharp retail correction “inevitable.”
Despite the price drop, CNN stressed that egg prices remain 49% higher than a year ago and well above pre-pandemic 2021 levels — data points Trump has not publicly acknowledged.
Even so, critics say the network’s earlier framing — labeling Trump’s broader claims about falling grocery prices as “false” — was premature at best and misleading at worst.
