Ex-New York Times and Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz is facing bipartisan backlash after downplaying the 9/11 terrorist attacks and suggesting that U.S. foreign policy justified them. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) on May 29, Lorenz described 9/11 as a “punchline” and echoed sentiments that the U.S. “deserved” the attacks due to its actions in the Middle East.
Responding to criticism of a novelty “9/11 cake,” Lorenz wrote:
“‘You don’t have enough respect for the sanctity of 9/11’ is such a ridiculously out of touch and frankly boomer ass take in 2025. 9/11 has been a punchline for over a decade, ppl are having 9/11 themed parties and there are 9/11 parody t shirts and memes all over.”
In a follow-up post, she added:
“Young ppl today also correctly recognize that 9/11 didn’t happen in a vacuum, it was a direct response to/consequence of US foreign policy in the middle east. The more u know abt what the US has done in the middle east the more u understand why many believe the US deserved 9/11.”

The remarks drew swift condemnation. Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle, who lost acquaintances in the attacks, replied:
“GenX here. Three people I knew died in the towers… Not a [expletive] punchline.”
GenX here. Three people I knew died in the towers, human beings just like Taylor Lorenz, who got on the subway and went to work one day and then suddenly while they were drinking their coffee they had to decide whether to jump or burn to death.

Economist Noah Smith questioned Lorenz’s influence in public discourse, writing:
“Bashing Taylor Lorenz is too easy. There will always be crazy assholes like her, clamoring for attention. Instead we need to ask why, as a society, we elevated Taylor Lorenz to be an important public intellectual, and gave her important jobs at the country’s top newspapers.”

This isn’t Lorenz’s first brush with controversy. She applauded the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, calling the alleged killer, Luigi Mangione, a “morally good man” and a “revolutionary.”
Following the recent announcement that former President Joe Biden, 82, is battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, Lorenz posted on X: “Hopefully he rots in hell and rests in piss.”
When contacted by media outlets, Lorenz defended her stance, labeling Biden a “war criminal” responsible for numerous deaths in the Gaza Strip and criticizing his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. She stated, “My sympathies will always lie with the innocent people Biden has killed and disabled, not the genocidal warmonger sanctioning their deaths.”
Most observers argue the comments cross a line between critique and cruelty, raising broader questions about the role of ideologues masquerading as journalists in shaping narratives around national tragedy and political violence.

How did the Slimes and the Toast gain their elite image, anyway? Covering up the Holocaust?
Not sure what her ethnic background is, but too many people come to America and bring their loyalties for the motherland with them. If you have decided to immigrate here, you leave your old life in the dust and welcome the privilege to be an American citizen. If you can’t do that, either rethink your move, or else just lay low, GET A JOB, and by all means, don’t go into politics and then profess to represent all Americans. Ilhan Omar ran for Congress only to represent her own little community and give the finger to everyone else. If you can’t be loyal to this country, either stay out of the way, or go home.
Well, 9/11 was an inside job!
