Good morning.

Congress is mounting its strongest challenge yet to President Trump’s Iran War, federal prosecutors have unveiled a sanctions-evasion case tied to Iran’s nuclear program, and investigators in Washington, D.C., are digging deeper into allegations that police officials manipulated crime statistics.

The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to approve a war powers resolution to limit unauthorized American military involvement in Iran.

Sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the measure would require the White House.

Loretta Swit, the Emmy-winning actress renowned for her portrayal of Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the critically acclaimed television series M*A*S*H, passed away on Friday, at her home in Manhattan. She was 87 years old.

Born on November 4, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey, Swit was the daughter of Polish immigrants. She began performing on stage at the age of seven and pursued her passion for acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Before achieving television fame, she appeared in various theater productions and had guest roles on popular TV series such as Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, and Bonanza.

Swit’s most iconic role came in 1972 when she was cast as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on CBS’ M*A*S*H (short for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), a dramedy set during the Korean War that followed the lives of the staff at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, a field hospital near the front lines.

The show depicted the challenges and absurdities of war through the lens of army doctors and support staff who coped with the horrors of combat by using humor, satire, and deep camaraderie. Over the show’s 11-season run, she appeared in 241 episodes, earning 10 Emmy nominations and winning twice.

Initially portrayed as a one-dimensional character, Swit worked diligently to evolve Houlihan into a complex, feminist role model. She influenced the show’s writers to develop her character beyond the “Hot Lips” persona, reflecting the growing awareness of feminism in the 1970s.

Outside of M*A*S*H, Swit had a diverse acting career. She appeared in films such as Race with the Devil (1975) and S.O.B. (1981), and had roles in television series including Hawaii Five-O and Murder, She Wrote.

Swit was also active in theater, starring on Broadway in productions like Same Time, Next Year and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

A passionate animal rights advocate, Swit dedicated much of her later life to animal welfare causes. She authored a book titled SwitHeart, with proceeds benefiting various animal-related nonprofit groups.

In 1983, Swit married actor Dennis Holahan, whom she met on the set of M*A*S*H. The couple divorced in 1995 and had no children.

Swit’s legacy endures through her groundbreaking work on M*A*S*H, one of television’s most innovative and influential shows.
