Authorities say Madsen suffered cardiac arrest. His body was discovered Thursday morning at his home in Malibu.
Madsen rose to prominence in the early 1990s as the sadistic Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs and later played Budd, a former assassin turned bouncer, in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He built a career around playing volatile, often violent men — characters who could be charming one moment and terrifying the next.
He had recently been attached to several indie projects, including Resurrection Road, making news of his death all the more unexpected.
Madsen’s personal life was marked by tragedy in recent years. In 2022, his son Hudson Madsen, a U.S. Army sergeant, died by suicide in Hawaii. The loss devastated Madsen and drew attention to the mental health challenges faced by veterans and their families.
Over a four-decade career, Madsen appeared in a long list of gritty dramas and cult classics. His film credits include Thelma & Louise (1991), Donnie Brasco (1997), Sin City (2005), The Hateful Eight (2015), and a fan-favorite voice role as mobster Toni Cipriani in Grand Theft Auto III (2001).
He was never a traditional leading man, but he didn’t need to be. Madsen carved out a legacy as a scene-stealer — a quintessential character actor with a fierce presence.
Whether playing cops, killers, or outlaws, he brought a raw physicality and quiet menace to the screen that audiences couldn’t ignore.
He earned lasting respect in independent film circles, thanks in large part to his collaborations with Tarantino, which helped shape the style and tone of ’90s American cinema.
Madsen may not have worn the crown of an A-lister, but he leaves behind one of the most distinctive resumes in modern film.
He will be remembered not just for the violence of Mr. Blonde’s razor, but for the way he made even the most brutal characters feel human.
