The release of the Durham Annex, long classified and long suppressed, delivers not a footnote but a thunderclap. Found by FBI Director Kash Patel in a secret room, hidden inside a burn bag marked for destruction, the annex narrowly escaped erasure from the historical record. We do not know why it was hidden, nor why it was never destroyed. But we do know this: had it remained buried, the American public would have been denied the clearest proof yet of how close we came to losing our republic and the very fabric of democracy. The annex confirms what many suspected and what legacy institutions mocked as conspiracy: that the Trump-Russia collusion narrative was not a tragic misunderstanding but a deliberate political weapon. This was not ordinary campaign roughhousing. It was a coordinated soft coup, conceived at the highest levels of the Obama administration, executed by Clinton’s campaign, and laundered through the FBI, CIA, and the pliant press.
The facts are, at last, exposed. Intelligence obtained in January and March 2016 showed confidential conversations between then-DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and senior figures at George Soros’ Open Society Foundations. The March memorandum went further: it documented plans by the Clinton campaign, with support from US “special services,” to falsely link Donald Trump to Russian organized crime. Fusion GPS, hired by Clinton’s lawyers at Perkins Coie, was already preparing opposition research with these aims. At the same moment, Obama was reportedly seeking to shut down the Clinton email investigation, a separate but related scandal that threatened her candidacy.
What is striking is not only the content but the response, or rather the lack of one. High-level FBI officials, including then-Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, were briefed on this intelligence as early as March 31, 2016. Yet they buried it. Instead of opening an investigation into the Clinton campaign’s apparent plan to fabricate a foreign conspiracy against a political opponent, they used Clinton-funded materials, the Steele Dossier, as pretext for surveilling Trump’s campaign via Carter Page. The FBI did not warn Trump. They spied on him.
That this was not an error but an operation is further demonstrated by the pattern of communication described in the annex. Emails, apparently sourced through Russian intelligence hacking of Soros-affiliated think tanks, include blunt acknowledgments of strategy. In one, a Clinton campaign advisor states: “Julie says it will be a long-term affair to demonize Putin and Trump… later the FBI will put more oil into the fire.” In another: “HRC approved [Campaign Advisor Julie’s] idea about Trump and Russian hackers hampering US elections. That should distract people from her own missing emails.”
The authenticity of these emails is not in serious doubt. Durham’s team, interviewing analysts with deep familiarity with the intelligence sources, judged the documents likely genuine. The CIA concurred. These were not Kremlin forgeries. They were real conversations. And they betray a damning truth: the Clinton campaign intended, with apparent support or acquiescence from elements within the FBI and CIA, to frame Donald Trump for collusion with a foreign power.
At this point, one might reasonably ask: why did this information not surface in real time? The answer is damning. As Senator Chuck Grassley observed, these intelligence reports were known to the FBI and DOJ yet never pursued. Brennan briefed Obama, Biden, Clapper, and Comey in August 2016. The CIA sent a referral to the FBI. But rather than investigate the Clinton campaign, the FBI deepened its probe into Trump. A rational observer would conclude that the government had picked a side. The intelligence agencies were no longer serving the republic. They were serving a faction.
Some will object: wasn’t the dossier eventually discredited? Didn’t the Mueller probe find no collusion? Yes, but that is the point. It took years for the truth to catch up with the lie. By then, the damage was done. The soft coup succeeded in its immediate goals: paralyzing the Trump administration, crippling the transition, justifying a special counsel, and feeding years of media hysteria. The goal was not to win in court, but to win in the court of public opinion. Lawfare, not law, was the strategy.
The annex also reveals that the FBI provided false information to the FISA court to renew surveillance warrants, while simultaneously failing to act on intelligence that a foreign government was attempting to infiltrate Clinton’s campaign. The contrast is stark. Trump was treated as a hostile actor based on opposition research. Clinton was shielded, even when credible evidence suggested foreign entanglement. Indeed, one reason a FISA warrant against a Clinton-linked foreign agent was delayed for months was that, according to internal comments, agents were “scared with the big name [Clinton] involved.”
Here we reach the core rot. Equal justice under law is a constitutional promise, not a partisan slogan. When the government fears one party’s candidate and targets the other, it ceases to function as a neutral enforcer. It becomes an instrument of faction. That is precisely what the Founders feared. Madison warned that “the accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.”
The institutions most entrusted with preserving the republic, the FBI, CIA, and DOJ, were co-opted. Some out of partisanship. Others out of fear. But the result was the same: an information operation run on the American people, in which the press became a megaphone, not a watchdog.
This is not conjecture. It is the conclusion that follows when one connects the declassified evidence, the contemporaneous memos, and the behavior of officials who should have known better. Durham’s annex does not merely recount isolated failures. It lays bare a systemic betrayal.
Had the FBI treated the Clinton plan as it treated Crossfire Hurricane, the outcome would have been different. There would have been no Steele Dossier scandal, no Mueller probe, no years of shadow cast over a presidency. But that was precisely the point. The Clinton campaign, desperate to distract from its own legal exposure and lacking a compelling message, chose to poison the well. The Obama White House knew. The intelligence community watched. And instead of stopping it, they joined in.
Even today, many in the press remain willfully incurious. Legacy outlets that breathlessly reported every leak about pee tapes and Alfa Bank now ignore the Durham annex or dismiss it as old news. They would rather forget their role as useful idiots or willing participants.
But Americans should not forget. Because this wasn’t just a hit job on Donald Trump. It was a hit job on democracy itself. It revealed that with the right alliances, a major campaign, media allies, and weaponized federal agencies, a losing candidate could frame her opponent as a traitor and very nearly destroy him.
They failed. Barely. But only because Trump survived the onslaught. Most candidates would not. That fact alone is terrifying. It should prompt serious institutional reform. FISA needs sunset provisions. The FBI must be restructured. The intelligence agencies must be stripped of domestic influence operations. And political campaigns that knowingly traffic in disinformation must face actual legal consequences, not media awards.
The Trump administration, now re-elected and staffed with patriots like Kash Patel and Pam Bondi, must ensure that what happened between 2016 and 2020 never happens again. Sunlight, transparency, and swift accountability are not luxuries. They are necessities for a constitutional republic. As Grassley rightly put it, the new administration must move “with maximum speed and transparency.”

Is there even a shred of integrity among that group? Much less adherence to their oaths of office? Seems to me that all they are concerned with is grabbing and retaining even more power.
None of them have suffered any consequence for their crimes yet. So fat it is all talk. Do republicans just want talking points to use in future campaigns or are they interested in justice?
