South Carolina Democrats have a serious mess on their hands — and it’s wearing nothing but underwear and shoes.
William “Mullins” McLeod, the leading Democratic candidate for governor, is under fire after police released dashcam footage from a May arrest in downtown Charleston. The video shows a barely clothed McLeod shouting that he’s “God” and “Superman,” while unleashing profanities and racially charged slurs — including the n-word at least twice.
He also made threats against political figures, both local and national.
Upon arriving at the jail, McLeod refused to exit the patrol car, telling an officer he would sleep in the back seat instead.
According to police, he was sweating profusely and had dilated pupils, signs often linked to stimulant drug use. Authorities didn’t confirm whether any toxicology tests were administered.
He was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
The South Carolina Democratic Party has called on McLeod to drop out of the race, saying they’re concerned for his well-being.
So far, McLeod refuses to back down. He claims the arrest was “unlawful” and says voters will eventually “understand what happened.” He insists the incident actually strengthens his campaign.
That’s wishful thinking.

McLeod, 53, of Charleston, ran for governor in 2010 but withdrew from the Democrat primary that year and endorsed the party’s eventual nominee, then-state senator Vincent Sheheen. He previously served two terms as chairman of the Charleston County Democratic Party (CCDP).
McLeod’s name has been touted as top prospect for governor in 2026, and sources familiar with his thinking have indicated he is considering such a campaign. Democrats stand little chance of winning a statewide race in South Carolina, however, having not won at that level since 2006. Democrats haven’t won a gubernatorial election since 1998.
“The small bench the South Carolina Dems do have is crumbling,” veteran political and corporate communications executive Wesley Donehue noted. “They’re completely irrelevant in South Carolina politics.”
A native of Walterboro, S.C., McLeod graduated from Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He has made a name for himself in the Palmetto legal community by securing numerous, high-dollar verdicts against all manner of defendants across the southeast.
His official biography calls him “a fearless trial lawyer and dedicated victims’ rights advocate.”
To anyone who’s not an unprincipled ideologue, the meltdown is more than a one-off controversy — it’s a glaring red flag. Regardless of party, fitness for office demands judgment and stability, and McLeod just put both in serious doubt.
For Democrats in the GOP-dominated Palmetto State, it’s one more headache they didn’t need.
