Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an executive order barring city police from cooperating with federal authorities — even as the city reels from another bloody holiday weekend.
At least seven people were killed and 37 wounded in shootings between Friday and Monday, Fox News reports. Most incidents ended without arrests, leaving gunmen free to roam the streets, according to police.
Despite the carnage, Johnson doubled down on his progressive policing agenda, signing an order Saturday to block cooperation with federal authorities — even as President Trump signals he may send in the National Guard and other federal forces to restore order in America’s Second City:
“This executive order makes it emphatically clear that this president is not going to come in and deputize our police department,” Johnson said at a news conference with other city leaders.
The mayor’s order affirms that Chicago police officers will continue to enforce state and local laws, but will not work with the National Guard or federal agents on patrols, arrests, immigration enforcement or other law enforcement actions.
“We will protect our Constitution, we will protect our city, and we will protect our people,” he said. “We do not want to see tanks in our streets. We do not want to see families ripped apart. We do not want grandmothers thrown into the back of unmarked vans. We don’t want to see homeless Chicagoans harassed or disappeared by federal agents.”

The White House dismissed Johnson’s order on Saturday, claiming that Democrats were attempting to make efforts to reduce crime a partisan issue.
“If these Democrats focused on fixing crime in their own cities instead of doing publicity stunts to criticize the president, their communities would be much safer,” a White House spokesperson scoffed in comments to Reuters.
Mayor Brandon Johnson snapped and stormed out of his press conference when asked how effective his executive order will be against the federal government.

He said, “I don’t take orders from the federal government.”
They certainly don’t take orders from him.

Johnson, elected with strong backing from the city’s progressive base and public sector unions, has faced mounting pressure to deliver both safety and reform — two goals that increasingly appear to be at odds.
