A new Pew Research Center poll reports American have a strongly negative view of President Donald Trump’s job performance, but not over liberal criticisms of his immigration policies.
Instead, Pew finds Americans overwhelming oppose Trump’s tariff tax hikes and massive federal spending, two positions generally associated with strong conservatives.
“Six months into his second term, public evaluations of President Donald Trump’s job performance have grown more negative. His job approval stands at 38% (60% disapprove), and fewer Americans now attribute several positive personal characteristics to him than did so during the campaign,” Pew reports.
“Two of the new administration’s signature accomplishments – the rollout of its tariff policies and the tax and spending law known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill” – garner considerably more disapproval than approval,” Pew adds.
According to Pew:
* 61% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s tariff policies, while 38% approve.
* 46% disapprove of the tax and spending law, while 32% approve (23% say they are unsure).
Interestingly, Trump’s embrace of tariffs and omnibus spending have realigned politics, at least in Pew’s poll, with Republicans supporting the record-breaking tariffs and spending bill and Democrats opposed.
According to Pew, Trump is creating a split among Republicans.
“People who identify as strong Republicans continue to overwhelmingly approve of Trump’s job performance: 93% do so today, little different than the 96% who approved at the outset of his presidency,” Pew reports.
“But there has been substantial erosion in his approval over this period among those who identify as Republicans but not strongly, as well as among independents who lean toward the GOP: About six-in-ten of those in these groups approve of Trump’s performance today, down from roughly three-quarters at the start of his second term,” Pew adds.
