Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) ignited a firestorm Thursday during a House Oversight Committee hearing on crime in Washington, D.C., after she appeared to label her Republican colleagues as “fascists”—a comment that led to an explosive response from Republican Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL).
The confrontation marks the latest example of increasingly reckless rhetoric from some Democratic lawmakers, particularly in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination—a national tragedy that has cast a spotlight on the political toxicity and casual use of incendiary labels like “fascist” and “Nazi” in mainstream discourse.
Tlaib Escalates with “Fascist” Label
In what was supposed to be a hearing focused on public safety in the nation’s capital, Tlaib used her time to launch a politically charged tirade:
“We can’t be passive right now. So nobody over there should take anything we say so personally as if we’re attacking them. No, we’re attacking a process. We’re not attacking people here… We need to stand up against this fascist takeover. That’s not a bad word. It’s a fact,” Tlaib declared.
Rather than making a nuanced argument about governance or policy, Tlaib leaned into the same hyperbole that has led critics to accuse her of divisive, inflammatory behavior—particularly dangerous in today’s climate.
It's been 8 days since a leftist assassin shot my friend @charliekirk11.

Just now, Rashida Tlaib just called us "FASCIST" again.
This rhetoric is WRONG.
This rhetoric is UNHINGED.
This rhetoric is OUT-OF-LINE.
This rhetoric has INSPIRED MURDER.

Donalds Fires Back: “Do I Look Like a Member of the Third Reich?”
Rep. Donalds immediately demanded time to respond, stunned by Tlaib’s characterization:
“Chairman, I think it’s insane that the gentlelady doesn’t have an argument, but she’s going to refer to me and some of my colleagues like we were from the Third Reich. This is insane… Do I look like a member of the Third Reich to you, Ms. Tlaib?”
Visibly angry, Donalds condemned Tlaib’s language as “radical” and “way out of line,” forcefully rejecting the suggestion that Republican members of Congress could in any way be equated to fascists or Nazis.
“I don’t respect everything that you say. But to say something like that to myself and a lot of my colleagues is way out of line. It’s way out of line,” he said.
Tlaib, rather than dialing back her rhetoric, responded by shouting over Donalds, repeating slogans like “Free D.C.” and mocking the GOP for previously voting by proxy during the pandemic.
Why It Matters: Words Have Consequences
Tlaib’s repeated use of the word “fascist”—a term historically associated with totalitarian regimes responsible for mass atrocities—has drawn heavy criticism, not just from Republicans but also from some Democrats.
Earlier this week, former Democratic strategist Dan Turrentine spoke out against the Democratic Party’s habit of branding Trump and the GOP as “fascists” or “Hitler-like,” particularly in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
“It’s bad politics. Two, it’s just not true,” Turrentine said. “Whenever a bad thing happens, parties need to call out in real time, ‘This is not acceptable.’”
But instead of tempering her tone, Tlaib appears to be doubling down—even as critics argue that inflammatory speech from political leaders can create a climate where violence feels justified to unstable individuals.
In the context of Thursday’s hearing, however, labeling fellow members of Congress “fascists” after a political assassination is particularly troubling.
“What message does that send?” one Capitol Hill staffer asked. “You’re essentially telling your base that your political opponents are enemies of democracy—then acting surprised when someone takes that literally.”
Final Thoughts: Time for Real Accountability
Rep. Tlaib’s comments may energize a fringe online base, but they do nothing to advance real legislative solutions or unify a fractured nation.
Moreover, misusing terms like “fascism” cheapens real historical suffering and undermines the gravity of the word itself. When everything is fascism, nothing is.
Unless Democrats begin to rein in this kind of unhinged rhetoric, they risk alienating not just political moderates—but their own credibility.

If the spineless Congressional Republicans were not such cowards and prisoners of the Deep Sate, they would censure (at the very least) or, better yet, impeach Tlaib for her completely inappropriate and inflammatory language. The only spine in Government today is President Trump and his cabinet appointments.
Hamas Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) is the facist.
Tlalib is a PIG!
It is time that Tlaib be referred to the appropriate ethics committees for appropriate actions.
