Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is facing renewed scrutiny after claiming in a CBS interview that she never witnessed signs of Joe Biden’s cognitive decline — even while flying with him to the now-infamous 2024 debate that led to the collapse of his re-election campaign.
In an appearance on CBS Mornings on Monday to promote her forthcoming memoir, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, Jean-Pierre insisted that she had never seen any mental deterioration in Biden, who was widely panned for his disoriented and subdued debate performance against then-candidate Donald Trump in June.
“I take this question incredibly seriously,” Jean-Pierre said. “I never saw anyone who wasn’t there. I saw someone who was always engaged… who understood policy and pushed us on the policy.”
Claims Spark Confusion — and Pushback from CBS Hosts
CBS hosts Tony Dokoupil and Gayle King pressed Jean-Pierre on how she, a senior member of the president’s inner circle, could have missed what millions of viewers saw during the debate — Biden losing his train of thought, freezing up, and speaking in a slurred, incoherent manner.
“So hard to understand,” King said, echoing widespread public disbelief.
Jean-Pierre doubled down, saying she did not interact with Biden during the trip to the debate, despite both of them being aboard Air Force One.
“It actually was one of those rare trips that I didn’t really see him until after the debate, even though I was on the plane,” she claimed.
When asked directly by King if she saw “nothing” that might have indicated Biden’s decline in the days and weeks prior, Jean-Pierre repeated that she only observed a president who was “engaged” and “sharp on policy.”
But her comments stood in stark contrast to what even mainstream media outlets eventually acknowledged. In August 2024, The Washington Post editorial board wrote: “The 81-year-old had shown signs of slipping for a long time, but his inner circle worked to conceal his decline.”
Jean-Pierre’s Memoir: A Break From the Party
In her book, Jean-Pierre criticizes fellow Democrats — not for allowing Biden to continue his campaign, but for pressuring him to step aside after the debate. She announced her resignation from the Democratic Party, calling herself an independent, and blaming party insiders for what she described as a betrayal of a man who had devoted more than five decades to public service.
“I was enraged and heartbroken that this man had given more than 50 years of his life to serving the American people, and in the end, he’d been treated poorly by members of his own party,” she wrote. “I don’t think I can stomach being in the Democratic Party anymore.”
Her comments appear to suggest that loyalty to Biden outweighed the obvious concerns about his fitness for office — a stance many critics see as emblematic of a White House culture of silence and dysfunction.
Fallout From the Debate
Biden’s disastrous debate performance marked a turning point in the 2024 race. Donations dried up, media support evaporated, and public trust plummeted. Just weeks later, Biden suspended his re-election campaign, leading to then-Vice President Kamala Harris stepping in as the nominee. She later admitted in her own memoir that Biden’s age had become a major liability and questioned whether it was “reckless” not to intervene sooner.
Critics Call Out Denial and Gaslighting
Jean-Pierre’s latest remarks have reignited criticism from both sides of the political spectrum, with conservatives calling it deliberate gaslighting, and Democrats frustrated by what they see as a public relations nightmare.
As Jean-Pierre embarks on her book tour, the questions surrounding what the White House knew — and when — about President Biden’s fitness for office are likely far from over.
