House Minority Leader Endorses Mamdani Right Before Early Voting Begins

Good morning.

Congress is mounting its strongest challenge yet to President Trump’s Iran War, federal prosecutors have unveiled a sanctions-evasion case tied to Iran’s nuclear program, and investigators in Washington, D.C., are digging deeper into allegations that police officials manipulated crime statistics.

The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to approve a war powers resolution to limit unauthorized American military involvement in Iran.

Sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the measure would require the White House.

After months of avoidance, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries formally endorsed Zohran Mamdani to become the next mayor of New York City. The endorsement — issued less than 24 hours before early voting begins — marks a pivotal moment in a contest that has exposed deep rifts within the Democratic Party.

Jeffries’ written statement praised Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democratic socialist and the party’s official nominee, for his commitment to affordability and inclusivity.

“Zohran Mamdani has relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy,” Jeffries said in a statement to The New York Times. “In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election.”

Jeffries also framed his endorsement as a stand against President Donald Trump, calling Trump an “existential threat” to the Democratic Party and to American democracy.

A Reluctant Embrace

National Democrats — including Jeffries — have been cautious about embracing Mamdani since his surprise victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the June primary. The self-described socialist is a controversial figure within the party, known for his advocacy of rent control, police reform, and criticism of Israel.

Pressure on Jeffries intensified in recent weeks, especially after progressive figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) publicly chastised him for withholding support.

With polls now showing Mamdani holding a commanding lead, more establishment Democrats have begun lining up behind him, signaling a recognition that his victory may be inevitable.

Mamdani’s Response

In a statement Friday afternoon, Mamdani downplayed earlier hesitancy from party leaders and emphasized unity.

“This campaign has always been about bringing people together to improve the quality of life for every New Yorker,” Mamdani said. “I welcome Leader Jeffries’ support and look forward to delivering a city government relentlessly committed to our affordability agenda — and to fighting Trump’s authoritarianism.”

Republican Backlash

Republicans swiftly condemned Jeffries’ endorsement, framing it as evidence of a leftward lurch within the Democratic Party.

Mike Marinella, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, declared, “So-called ‘Leader’ Hakeem Jeffries has officially surrendered to Zohran Mamdani and the socialist mob now running the Democrat Party.”

Ed Cox, chair of the New York Republican Party, went further, accusing Jeffries of “capitulation” to extremist elements.

“In an act of supreme cowardice, Jeffries threw his lot in with an openly Communist, anti-Semitic, defund-the-police, globalize-the-intifada extremist,” Cox said in a statement.

The Republican National Committee also weighed in, with spokeswoman Delanie Bomar calling the endorsement “an in-kind contribution” to GOP efforts in the 2026 midterms.

Schumer Still on the Sidelines

While Jeffries’ endorsement made headlines, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has so far withheld his own. Asked about the race earlier this week, Schumer said only that he would “continue to have conversations” with Mamdani.

Looking Ahead

As New Yorkers prepare to vote on November 4, Mamdani appears poised to become the first openly socialist mayor of the nation’s largest city in nearly a century. His campaign has raised major concern about the future of the Democratic Party.
